Clay Modelling class

Something that I thought that I’d never do is, teach a class. Standing up in front of everyone, expecting you to teach them something worth their while. This activity required me to teach a class of underprivileged children ranging from age of 7 to 17 years. Catering to each student according to their maturity level was difficult. One of the other problems that I identified was that there would be a language barrier. Teaching what I have learnt in English in a local language would be a task. This activity collectively taught me how to handle attention, how to interact with each and every student and make them feel comfortable to create a healthy learning environment.

There are certain responsibilities that come along when you teach a class. There are certain ethics that need to be taken into consideration, such as not passing on knowledge that is incorrect. To make sure that I taught the class the right things, I had to prepare myself. I started brushing up my knowledge regarding clay modelling such as, the different techniques used or how to use tools.

Another skill that I learnt was to coordinate with my peer mentor. I realised that working collaboratively and dividing work made things a lot easier and smooth. What I realized is that when these children utilize their time for such extra-curricular activities, they learn new skills, which might give them a productive way to pass their time, probably keeping them away from bad influences such as drug abuse.

CAS Personal Profile

Hello! I am Pranit Bagadia studying in Fountainhead school. I am 16 years but in about a month and half I will turn 17! To introduce myself, sometimes I can be fun, boring, I can get angry and even be calm at times; overall I am a complete mixture of an introvert and extrovert (hard to believe it right?). The best thing that I find about me, is that I can start a conversation with any Tom or Harry, whether it’s about a tv show or about the weather, I can talk to a stranger for hours. On simple terms, I am tv show addict. I just enjoy watching tv shows all day; if given the chance, I can watch tv shows for ages..

I lack the skill of commitment towards my work. I have never been able to complete my homework on time or submit an assignment on time. This pinches me many a times. The absence of this quality has led to negative outcomes in my life, like, I have been scoring very bad marks in my exams due to this. For now, I supposedly think I would like to be involved in more outdoor activities, maybe in terms of participation or initiating it. What I like to learn? Well, sarcastically speaking, I love to research about fictional characters (Game of thrones, Walking dead, Avengers…), their origin, their personality, their powers, everything. It’s my favorite way to pass my time. But in the practical world, I like to learn and research about computers, their working, the technicalities, their structure, compatibility, in short everything linked with computers.

Well, my dreams? There are millions of them, one of them is that to simply wake up one day as BILL GATES! Be the richest person in the world, have power to influence people, be the authority and a role model to many. Won’t that be cool? Won’t you be glad to have ‘BILL GATES’ as your friend? Sometimes I think, that I even lack the mind to imagine the things I could do with all that money and power. But they are just dreams, so yeah. Overall I think life is an adventure and is always mysterious.

“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” ― Robert Frost

CAS Essay…

Ever since I started with IB DP program, I realized that there are various skills that I lacked in  and consequently, wasn’t able to complete tasks properly on time. I gradually had to face a lot of issues in fighting with my ‘laziness’. In the beginning of the 11th grade, I barely used to complete any homework or participate in any indoor or outdoor activity. This hunger of laziness had started to affect my daily life, influencing my scores and personality. It was then, when I was introduced to the IB program ‘CAS’, well to be truthful, in the start I found this program, boring and time wasting; but after I began performing tasks, taking part in activities with my peers and even organizing a few of them, I understood how fun this program was for me and the various skills it was helping me develop exponentially. ‘CAS’ standing for Creativity, Activity, and Service – has overall helped me by making me more aware about my strengths and weakness along with developing new skills, building up the confidence to undertake new challenges, initiating and planning activity collaboratively with my peers, showing perseverance and commitment in my activities as well as being engaged with its global importance and the ethical implication along with it. As a whole CAS, has helped me shape myself into a well rounded person.

Thinking of CAS, the one activity that immediately strikes in my mind is the ‘Learning Camps’. This activity was a project which I had initiated with my friends. Well, the fact is that I will never be able to forget this activity in my whole life is because no other activity pushed me through such mental and physical pressure as these ‘learning camps’. On the very first day of this activity, we were planning to teach a bunch (more like 10-12 students were expected to come) of students with the starter course for computers (like what is computer, a bit of its history and ask them that do they even know how to use a one?), but to our surprise, more than 50 students just smashed in; Shashvat literally had to barricade the ICT lab. A hell of a day that was! Even after that, every day at learning camps, there were many critical surprises for us; like the one when one of the student, simply got lost in school, and all four of us were running in every corner to find him like cats and dogs. But even though we had to face such difficulties, at the end we realized the many skills we lacked in ourselves such planning, and worked on it. This activity helped me interact with stranger more fluently, even in a language I don’t know, ‘Gujarati’.

CAS has taught me how to improve the skills I lacked in and also how to develop new skills, by taking an initiation to participate in all or random activities. It helped me cover all the skills I lacked which further helped me in my IB program. The one thing I have learned about myself is that, when I am dedicated to achieve something, well I achieve it, with the help of my family and friends. Taking an example of ISA, teamwork and leadership was the key for our great success in the fest. It was because we work collaboratively with each other that time in ISA was fun all the time. There were competitions such the “presentation of stall” which would have been a debacle – in which we were suppose to decorate stalls and present a particular country. We also kept the ethical considerations in mind, we did not cheat at all or break and of the fest’s rule. “Win or lose, we will not cheat” was our motto in the fest.

Today I am a different person from the one I was 2 years ago, and that is because of CAS. It has helped me to become a well-rounded individual and to become more proactive. My overall CAS experience has been adventures and fun. Today I use the skills I developed through CAS in my day to activities and in tough situations, which has made my life easier and more productive. In short, I can say that the ‘CAS’ program has effectively made me an International Minded person.

CAS essay

The ib life has been a real struggle for me  in the past two years , but CAS has been that one component that made me feel delight . Cas has not been and task for me to do , but a path to bring me closer to my self. Just like Mahatma Gandhi said   “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” Cas gave me the opportunity to put his words into action .

Now that my requirements are over doesn’t mean i don’t do Cas any more , it just comes naturally to me to serve , to engage and to get creative .Today i have evolved due to cas .

Whenever the thought is about CAS the one event that come to my  mind at the very thought is Bal mela -the event of many smiles .Bal mela has been that one event that brings both tears and smiles to me , it has been an event where I understood that  Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own action .  witnessing  the  faces of 1456 children light up with joy and ecstasy which gave our event a reason for contentment. Happiness never decreases by being shared, said Buddha and this day proved the words of buddha true for me .

To me Cas is something that will always be in my veins, because in order to make this world a better place Creativity , Action , and service is all that is needed and Cas has taught me that !

Activity 3: Arts Fest

Arts Fest, that was held on the 22nd and 23rd August 2015 at Fountainhead School, is a combination of events that are included in Art. There were multiple sub-events that happened in categories like Music, Dance, Visual Arts and Drama.

Dance events: Stomp, Folk Contemporary, Western, Classical, Fusion and Classical Ballet

Music events: Vocals (Solo), Group Singing (Sugam Sangeet), Instrumental (Solo-Rhythmic), Instrumental (Solo-Melodic), Live Band.

Drama events: Mime, Street play, Musical, General Drama, Monologue, Skit, Puppetry, Script writing, elocution and improvisation, Stand up comedy.

Visual Arts: Live drawing (Still life), Mehendi, Rangoli, Thali/Pot decoration, Best out of Waste, Bouquet making, Salad decoration, Photography, Quelling, Toy making (clay), Calligraphy, Big Picture, Drawing and Painting, Short Film.

I, Event Organiser, was given the responsibility to manage all the events of Dance and Visual Arts. Tiruja, my co-partner was given the responsibility of Music and Drama.

My aims for the event were:

  • Learn how to plan, organize and conduct an event
  • Learn to prioritise work
  • Develop Time-Management skills
  • Synergize effectively with Segment Coordinators

During that time, I was ill. I was infected with viral, and due to constant fever, I wasn’t feeling my very best. However, I learned how to give my best no matter however the circumstances are. Another challenging task was to make the schedule of how the events will be scheduled, and what is the tentative time that each sub-event will take considering the number of participants in that particular sub-event. Another challenge was to have meeting with all the co-ordinators, as all the students have different class timings because of different grades. Often times, only half of the people showed up in the meeting. IT was disappointing as well as difficult to then convey the decisions to the members who couldn’t attend the meeting. Therefore, I can say that I have had the courage to accept new challenges and face them proactively.

I would like to evaluate myself. I can say that I have identified my own strengths. I’ve had the opportunity to organise an event for the first time in grade 11. This opportunity generated a positive energy in me towards organising more events. I’ve learned how much imperative it is to plan the event effectively, and how much determination, team work, collaboration with every team member, fairness, optimism and commitment is needed to make such a huge activity successful. Being fair to each volunteer is very important otherwise the event may fail. By keeping my ethics in mind, I patiently listened to all volunteers and paid attention to their work calmly.

To sum up, I would like to say that it was a remarkable event that helped me learn lessons that will help me all my life.

Essay -“One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching” ― Gerard Way

The CAS component has given me an abundance of opportunities to learn, grow/develop, explore, but most importantly, it has given me doors that I would have never stepped in earlier. Creativity, Activity and Service were a stress-buster with sincerity. It has not only motivated me to take various roles that I always wanted to do, but has also made me a better person with essential skills required in life. The compulsory component of CAS was spread over the course of two years, I tired to be fair (ethical), put in my sincere efforts and give qualitative work (perseverance and commitment) throughout the time period.

I have tried to put in my heart and soul in all the activities done throughout, however, FSMUN 2.0 is an activity that reflects my learning and enjoyment of the CAS process. Attending a MUN for the first time, feeling like a newcomer, and still having major responsibilities. My role in the FSMUN organization committee was that of the head of the logistics and the finance department. FSMUN experience was something different, it is special because of my personal engagement with the whole project. It was the most impressive activity because it tested my physical and mental strength both. The amount of hard-work put in by everyone was immense. The activity judged the patience that I had built. However, through all the downs, appreciating the ups, neglecting the flaws, and loving the recognition of winning the best OC award. As Mother Teresa says “There is more hunger for love and appreciation in this world than for bread”.

“The aim of the IB programme is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.” As IB learners we strive to implement various learner profiles in the CAS activities performed. Mostly all the learner profiles were implemented in different activities. The four major ones were thinkers, communicators, reflective and balanced. Using critical and creative thinking skills to analyze and take responsible action on complex problems is what thinkers are expected to do. During Garba fest, there were some issues regarding the payment and the malpractice regarding the passes had took place, as soon as I got to know, being the head of the finance department, I had to take a decision. I went to the higher authority and then solved the case internally, as being fair to others was also important. Being a leader or taking up a role requires a effective communication. During Bal Mela using the local language to communicate with underprivileged children or during the meetings for events to communicate effectively, seek perspectives and honest feedbacks, habit 5 of mutual understanding had to be put in practice ‘seek first to understand and then to be understood’. In collaboration with the learner profile ‘Reflective’, the habit of mutual benefit ‘think win-win’ played a role. During the flashmob event we thoughtfully considered the world issues and our own creative ideas and experience to perform it. We ‘synergized’ (the habit of creative cooperation) to work and understand our strengths and weaknesses, so that we have mutual respect and trust towards each other, We reflected our past learning on the issue of education, in order to support our mission as well as for personal development. Following the habit of integrity and execution, habit 3 ‘put first things first’, the learner profile balanced was implemented. Considering the importance and not the urgentness of different aspects, I planned my scheduled (‘begin with the end in mind’, the habit 2 of vision), deadlines were kept, and priorities were identified. Issue of time management with balancing the social life, family/friends time, school work and CAS-work had always occurred, but then the interdependence of our work with others was also something to be kept in mind. Valuing the IB learner profiles has helped me to become responsible and work effectively.

No individual can work alone in isolation for a long period of time. We need support and help to make a difference. Through work in groups and various people, being an introvert I have opened a little bit because I had to approach various people and for that I also had to learn to communicate effectively. I had learn to be patient and calm to make calculated decision as it was vital. About others I learnt that it is a human tendency to be selfish, show power and apply authority where not needed, take actions and decision in hurry which are against our ethics and values and later regret them, etc. But most important thing about relations that I understood during the CAS process was, mixing of leadership and management roles with that of our personal relations. We have been hearing about how to keep our professional and personal lives separate, but when it comes to our friends and family we always have our biases that played a role during many of the events, which raised various issues too. However, to overcome all the difficulties I had the school authority to approach, in personal cases I had my family (especially parents) and friends to help me get through it. Nothing is waste, I have always learned something or the other from all the activities, it has benefitted us in mental/physical ways. Combining the whole experience, all the IB attitudes like appreciation (being grateful), independence (not relying on others), commitment (not giving up and completing the activities),  cooperation (synergizing), integrity (doing ethical work and being honest), tolerance (accepting others), and respect I have developed through the time period.

Out of all the learning outcomes, learning outcome 3 “Initiate and plan a CAS experience” required the greatest amount of work/efforts and time. It is because we were required to do from scratch, starting from having ideas to its execution. Bal-Mela being my CAS project work came under this learning outcome. This the process for Balmela form tis planning to execution lasted for seven months. It was successful event. However, before the few days of execution I fell ill, therefore, the load of work fell on my other partners. Other difficulties regarding management and materials occurred, however, due to a wide span of time and with a large working team, we were able to control the things happening. All of us were committed as we used to come early to complete the work. I also believe that the process of effective communication helped as we were able to update each other about the process and the good understanding between the three of us lead to smooth process with no fights. Though we did not give up, I felt that Investing so much time on one activity and balancing the other work becomes difficult. Hence, it was challenging for me to achieve this learning outcome more than once.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson says “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”, I was really enthusiastic about this component of IB and now after completing this, I believe that I have achieved a lot. I would love to take this forward in life, by sharing, using and adding to my learning and experiences. Taking opportunities to help others and put in efforts to make the world a better place, I aim to do parts CAS all my life.
CAS apart from being the fun part of the diploma programme is a process of developing life skills, growing as a human being, and most importantly it is about learning. CAS has also strengthened the bond between us friends by building our trust. Remembering all the activities done throughout the process is like walking down the memory lane. CAS has given me a lot of things, but most importantly, it has given me memories in form of treasure to hold to myself.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
