Activity 11: Winter Trip to Naggar

Amongst the heights of the Himalayan tops and lush greenery with toppings of snow, there lies the village called the Naggar Village. This calm and beautiful village is around 26 kms from main town Kullu and just 12kms from Manali. We stayed at the famous Naggar Castle for four days. The beautiful Naggar castle (now a Himachal Tourism hotel and restaurant) is the legacy of its status as the old capital of the former Kullu Kingdom about 500 years ago. The castle commands an incredible view of the river far below and the villages that litter the opposite bank, with the distant snow peaks beyond the Rohtang La Pass visible on a clear day.

View from Naggar Castle

As the castle was built years ago, it was like a cultural heritage. I got to learn from the culture of Himachal Pradesh from the castle itself. The walls were made of wood and stones that never broke, and the castle has rooms in the name of the king and his family when this castle was made. The castle had a temple too. I gained knowledge about the significance of that temple. We also ate local food which was something new, interesting and delicious.

List of activities:

  • Treks and walks in and around Naggar.
  • Visit to different temples
  • Drive and visit Manali and Solang valley.
  • Skiing
  • Indoor games

1. Treks and walks in and around Naggar

Treks were the most difficult part. It required lots of endurance and perseverance. The job of being on time, in early morning, for breakfasts, followed by treks is really demanding. However, I was always committed to every activity I participated it. I gave in my 100 % efforts. I was punctual everyday, which gave me a sense of commitment, a sense of responsibility. We went for different treks everyday. When I was in grade 10, I went to a Jayalgarh, Uttarakhand in December. I won the best adventurous award and a medal. Since then, I have been always curious in adventurous activities like treks. I wanted to develop my stamina more and more, so that I could walk at a steady rate, but faster. I explored things by walking fast. Trekking fast is my strength. Climbing slopes is always difficult, but the energy inside me never dies. I take it up as a challenge, accept it, and stay happy. It excites me, and makes me want to trek more.

While trekking, I saw various new things, such as the apple orchid. We came across beautiful sites where Bollywood movies have been shot such as Jab We Met.

2. Visit to different temples

The visit to different temples was quite wonderful. History says that even an earthquake couldn’t break a temple. the village of Naggar follows Buddhism, however temples of Shri Krishna and different God were also present. That made me realise about the diversity of culture in a small village itself.

Another thing that I discovered about was the splendid artist, Nicholas Roerich. We visited a museum that displayed his painting, and a bungalow close to the museum where he stayed. His paintings represent the beauty and ambiance of Naggar. I got knowledge about the life of the artist.

3. Drive and visit Manali and Solang valley

In Manali, we did street shopping. I was impressed by the art and culture of Naggar. I bought a diary that represents their art so that it stays as a memory.

Out of the four days, one day was a visit to Manali and Solang valley. We saw a valley that was full of snow. We did tube sliding with partners. It was very steep, dangerous, but so much fun. I was so exultant to do it.

4. Skiing

Skiing was a dream come true. I had always wanted to learn skiing. I did skiing for the first time. We were taken to a safe path of snow. They instructed us, and we followed them. I fell down once, however, I picked myself up. At first I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to balance, however, I’ve learnt that ‘try and try until you succeed’. The ability to never lose up compelled me to stand up and ski again. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.

5. Indoor activities (Games, and yoga)

It was risky to go for treks after evening, so we stayed at the castle and played some games that rejuvenated us. We played games such as snatching the partner, and zip-zap-boing. They cheered my mood.

Yoga was something that I disliked. However, I realised that after doing surya namaskar, one feels flexible, and light.

I am the one wearing black track pants, blue nike shoes, and peach jacket.

I am the one wearing black track pants, blue nike shoes, and peach jacket.

During these 5 days, I have realised how important maintaining a group is. While trekking, no one was in a race. everybody walked on their own pace, but made sure to always be together. The whole grade, developed as a great team and didn’t give any opportunities of complains to the guides of the trip. It was one of the best things that our grade has achieved till now. From playing cards together, to playing team games, to sharing different stories at night with the full grade was a new accomplishment.

The highlight of this trip was when I skied and learned about the art and culture of Naggar. Overall, it was a trip full of adventure, knowledge, amazing experiences and life learning  lessons.

Activity 5: FSMUN 2.0

logo2 (1)

I volunteered for the second edition of Fountainhead School Model United Nations, India that took place in Fountainhead School on the 28th and 29th November 2.0 as a graphic designer which includes making ID cards for the participants as well as organizing team, designing posters for each committee, creating certificates for all categories.

This was the first time that I had volunteered for something new. I hoped to learn new skills in order to develop my personality, and contribute fairly towards this 2-day event.

For the best outcome, I had gone through the documents of the first edition of FSMUN. Going through past year’s certificates, ID cards, posters, I had a clear idea about my areas of concern for the event. It benefitted me in such a way that I could do my work effectively i.e. quality work, in minimum time.

As it was a new task for me, I had minimal idea about the applications to use. I researched, consulted my friends, and concluded that the best application was Microsoft publisher. I learned using various new tools.  I had to admit, that in the beginning it was difficult and challenging for me, however, I got the hang of it gradually. It was really challenging to find new templates, and then match different textures and designs using the new technology. I am grateful to all the people who helped me overcome this fear of not doing well. Additionally, this event gave me the wonderful opportunity to develop my research skills. I gained knowledge about  different parts of the world while making posters representing agendas and an image related to the issue. I was able to connect with the issues of the world, and even though I wasn’t participating in the conference, I could think about the best possible solutions of the issues with global significance. It enabled me to get a deeper understanding about the conflicts and problems of various nations.

I, truly wanted to participate as a delegate and indulge in the conferences, however, due to some problems, I couldn’t participate.

I had to struggle between my studies and  taking out time to design posters. Therefore, time management is something that I got to learn from the event. For the print of ID cards and certificates, and various posters, I also had to collaborate with the team of utilities frequently. Keeping the dimensions of all documents as accurate as possible was very important, for which I had consulted the Director General of the event, Maharsh Benday, and the Secretary General, Aashna Jain often.

I made sure that the documents, folders, ID cards, certificates were available at least 4 days before the 28th of November, thereby maintaining my devotion and responsibility towards the event. I had also printed extra documents, so that they are useful in last minute crisis.

According to my ethics, I was very crisp and clean with my work. I made sure not to mix any documents or photographs. I made sure that I do not create any loop holes. I didn’t copy any information from the internet. They were my own pure, creative ideas. While taking images as reference, I maintained academic honesty by citing the reference. I didn’t give the organisers the chance to complain about any of the work I had done.

To conclude, I am really grateful that I got the opportunity to learn something new. I can’t wait for the third edition of FSMUN.

Activity 7: Organising Bal Mela’16

The Bal Mela- The day we made masses smile, and we smiled as well!

Education is just not about gaining knowledge but also about giving and sharing knowledge. This event gave  me the opportunity to share all the knowledge I had in a form of a Mela. A Mela where children of the city from the government schools and local communities, normally children who aren’t privileged were given access to various activities.

The Bal Mela, on 13th February 2016, was a notch apart, especially for the Grade 7 to 11 students since this time, they were the volunteers.  It was a unique and fun experience as well as a learning experience. We, Hetvi, Naomi and I, the organisers of the event positioned ourselves as the head of the event, which included planning the activities, allocating those activities, selecting the volunteers, planning the schedule, ordering the resources, calling government schools, arranging the food for around 1500 children from government schools, and what not. Student volunteers positioned themselves at  every stall, tattoo making, face painting,  mask making, puppet making, science experiments, the running stage, and many more.

The under-privileged students from all over Surat, as well as the neighbouring villages, visited our school. The smile stretched on their faces, was really priceless. It made me realize the real worth of so many things of our daily life, we took for granted. It made me realise how I could use my skills to make them laugh, and most importantly to make them enjoy. It made me feel positive about my developing skills, as a person and as an organising head as well.

After the schools had visited all of the stalls, the students also got a platform to showcase their talent in front of the whole school and other children, giving them a lot of inspiration and motivation. From, dancing to awe-inspiring stunts, the children were capable of everything. They became very friendly with us, and we were also very delighted to get these many new friends. I captured all these memories through numerous photographs and videos, with them. I was left amazed, by their talents and gifts. When we asked the teachers and students the best part of the Bal-Mela, we more or less got the same answer- The contagious and innocent smile, by the children.

The Bal Mela ended with all of us, the students, their teachers, the volunteers, the helpers and our teachers, ALL dancing freely with each other. From Garba to the latest Bollywood songs, we danced and sang along at the top of our voices without any boundaries. Any outsider wouldn’t have guessed that the under-privileged children just met us today; we got together that well. The thrill and the enthusiasm in the air was really intoxicating.  The time just flew by when we were with them, teaching them, talking to them, dancing freely with them and enjoying ourselves. And then they left and the school fell silent as there wasn’t the chatter, the buzz and the over-all jolly atmosphere. This once-in-a-lifetime memory is going to be etched on our minds, forever.

There are always many ups and downs in an event. Our team was truly disappointed when some of the volunteers didn’t turn up on the D-day. However, I believe that it was my commitment, it was OC team’s commitment and perseverance that made the event a big success. Because of this event, I have learned to work under pressure. A day before the event, nervousness had trapped me from head to toe. However, on the 13th of Feb, I have learned to be prepared for the worst and the best.

I started working with my team a month ago. Out team, Falguni ma’am and Aayushi ma’am have had several meetings so that we make sure nothing goes out of way. This event taught me the importance of working collaboratively and the need to be patient and tolerant because in a team of nearly 100 volunteers and 1500 children, success can be achieved only if people work together. Our team and I have cooperated with all the volunteers at least twice before the D-day by inviting all the volunteers for meeting. This made me feel connected with all the volunteers, and also made me realise how much vital it is to interact with volunteers well to make the event go well. The meetings centred around the activities give to the volunteers and the issues related to the same. We made sure that the volunteers are satisfied with their events. Google forms had been submitted earlier, so that we act fairly, and unbiased with the volunteers as it was against our principles, against our ethics. While deciding food, I strictly followed the school policy as junk food wasn’t allowed on that particular day. This was an ethical decision made by me and the team. I believe that if renowned schools from all over Gujarat start organising activities like these, it will have a huge impact on the minds and bodies of underprivileged children. The number of students getting opportunities to discover new things in their life will develop them personally and professionally. Slowly by moving from Gujarat to other states and then to the countries, will have a global impact on the mindsets of people. We would be able to find more positivity and optimism in the world around us.

If I get a chance to organise the event again, I would definitely make sure to get as many volunteers as I can, because I have realised, that without sufficient volunteers, the event is highly likely to fail miserably. I remember, that while the teachers of our school were taking an interview of mine for the organiser of Bal Mela, I told them about my past experiences with many activated I conducted. I also shared my records of being punctual with all tasks and how I promise them to do everything on time even for this event. I am glad they felt I had the potential to organise this huge event.

We had also changed the logo of the event after a long time.

Here are some evidence from the event:

Bal Mela’16

To sum up, I would like to say that this event gave me the skills to manage different tasks at a time, conduct meetings with volunteers, guide them to the right way, communicate with teachers, staff members and underprivileged students, ensure the availability of resources on time, checking all tiny details one day prior to the event, cooperating with volunteers, working as a team and not loosing my temper. I have developed a lot as an individual.

As  Kahlil Gibran  truly said “You  give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself and your time  that you truly give.” I got to experience the real joy of giving.

Activity 4: Teachers’ Day

Every year, Teachers’ Day is celebrated in our school on the 5th of September. Since the past 3 years, I’ve been a part of this event. It is the perfect, most accurate day to exhibit our affection and care for all the teachers of the school. This year, the teachers’ day was celebrated on the 4th of September, 2015. We, Disha, Aarsh and I planned to organise this auspicious day.

I developed my organizing skills, learned how to juggle with time management, and also improved my communication skills with my co-partners. Moreover, it was difficult to coordinate with all grade, ranging from Grade 8 to Grade 12. To collaborate with all the grades effectively requires a lot of efforts.

This time, and it was the last year for Grade 12, we, (Disha, Aarsh and I) decided that Grade 12 should do something unique, innovative and special for their subject teachers. Whereas, for students of Grade 8 to 10, it was decided that they would be appointed a section of a grade ranging from Jr.Kg to Grade 7. Here, I faced a lot of challenges. To keep track of the practice of Grade 12 performances, and allocating different section to the senior year students was burdensome. Thus, organising such an event requires commitment and perseverance.

IMG_3892

I would like to appreciate the support of my partners, Aarsh and Disha. Without them, this event wouldn’t have been so successful, impactful and ecstatic. The three of us had struggled a lot during giving the allocation of junior grades. We tried our best to be fair to all the students of Grade 8 to Grade 11. Giving equal rights to everyone during allocating the classes to the students from Grade 8 to 11 was our another aim besides making this event a successful one.

Lastly, the thought of giving all the teachers a card with a rose (colours: yellow and red) was remarkable. This day will be a memorable day for all the teachers that because of such an exclusive idea.

If I evaluate my performance, I’ll be giving myself a 9 out of 10 because I have worked really hard, developed my decision making skills and gained confidence in organising huge events. I have also learn to accept new challenges and work on my weak areas. As far as I know, I have not received complaints regarding the collaboration with the volunteers or the event. From the beginning, till the end, I have tried my best not to be unfair to any of the volunteers or teachers. I believe, that the event was successful because of my perseverance, my coordination with Disha and Aarsh, and the support of all the volunteers and teachers involved.

Cas Reflection Gym

On 3rd September, 2015 I decided to start going to gym for personal fitness. Going to gym was an activity that I wanted to do from a long time, but never had the commitment to do so, until 3rd September. I decided to regularly exercise at my school gym for four months from then.

The biggest trouble I faced in this activity was waking up early to go to gym in school. I started getting less sleep because of this. At that moment I really wanted to quit this activity, however, instead of quitting I decided to go to the gym near my house instead of the gym in school. This helped me get proper sleep.

We were only supervised by our mentor on the first day, and after that we were required to exercise on our own. This created ethical implications in the activity such as we were expected to productively use our time and also take care of the equipments in the gym. This even lead to teamwork as me and my friends were helping each other as necessary in the form of motivation and pointing out each other’s mistake.

I developed a lot of things from this activity other than fitness. The most crucial of which being commitment towards your goals. This activity made me realize how important it was to be committed in life.

Garba Fest

Never in my life had I organized an event, nor did I ever imagine that I could. Garba Fest is an event that I am absolutely proud of; not only because of its success but because of the thrill that it gave people as well as the help it did to the society. I am a person who believes that it is my duty to help the people who have been born in unfortunate conditions because I think that it is not their fault but their rotten luck as opposed to mine, which is comparatively good. Therefore I along with my partner came up with the idea of a fund raiser. However for a fundraiser we had to think of various things that we could offer to the public in order to raise money. I am glad to have chosen business and management as one of my subjects because it helped me a lot in evaluating ideas from the business point of view. After brainstorming over a lot of ideas we came up with the idea of a Garba event as we thought that it was something that would attract our audience the most. This is where we took into consideration the saying that Gujarati people can do Garba anywhere and everywhere.

This plan just started as an idea of a fundraising event, but as we advanced with the plan the motive was not only fund raising but also give the students of fountainhead school an opportunity to celebrate a much loved event along with all their friends and teachers. Planning for this event was by far the most tedious job I had ever done and it was hard not to scream when anything went wrong. The first thing that we had to do was decide exactly what we wanted to provide in the fest and make departments accordingly, and thanks to the knowledge I gained in BM classes we were able to do so. After this, came one of the most important step which was to choose the departmental heads. This was really hard as we had to choose people whom we could rely on so as to not mess up our event. Also it was hard to keep our biases aside and to not give our friends priority, so we went along with the method of interviews, keeping the much stressed upon “ethical concerns” in mind. Initially we did not have a really detailed plan when we appointed departmental heads; however when we started having meetings (which were really chaotic) and started taking into consideration other’s ideas and opinions we eventually came up with quite a well detailed plan.

IMG_1638During the ‘rigorous’ planning stage of 1.5 months I discovered that I was horrible at communication and negotiation skills but thankfully the so called Garba fest team had people to cover these flaws. That was when I understood that having all skills is not necessary but knowing the right people who have them is. Hilarious but true. I was immensely relieved for the planning stage to be over because by then I was absolutely ready for some action or the so called ‘execution stage’. Little did I know that the real chaos was about to hit us. I am surprised as to how is it that I managed not to end up in a mental hospital during that stage. We had to run all over our ridiculously big school to get the smallest of things done, like confirming the amount of resources that the school was going to give us. We did so much of running that I was almost certain that we could include the activity component of CAS on the basis of that. Almost! There were a lot of problems of communication among the departments, and the only words that consoled us were “its ok. This is your first time”. However we managed to pull through. To say that we were ready for the D-day was an understatement.

IMG_1635As I entered school that day, just the sight of the lightening made my eyes well up with happy tears. I felt such joy in that moment; I felt sense of accomplishment. But it was just that moment because after that all hell broke loose. The word chaos wouldn’t do justice to the situation of that time. We also had to prep everyone up for the surprise performance by ASTH. I thought that it would be a good idea to have a performance done on women empowerment because it fit perfectly with the theme of Garba as we worship a goddess on that day instead of a god.  Finally we had everything set up, and there were so many people who had bought the tickets right after seeing the decorations.

IMG_6231 12107211_865971260189945_3910482347972815133_n

When the fest began there were always little things that needed attention. However the encouragement from the crowd kept me going. Neither could I have been more satisfied of the fest when it ended nor could I have been more disheartened of the fact that it did. Overall it was one of the most enthralling experiences that I have ever had, and the profits were just a bonus.

Book club (long term)

This was a school led event where each of the students needed to complete at least ten books by the end of one academic year. There were three levels which an individual can choose and complete the criteria of the book club. There were 3 categories; 1- Debutant, where 10 books are required to complete; 2- Challenger where 12 books should be read and 3- Master Blaster where 15 are been required.

Reading books were not my cup of tea, however, I got out of my comfort zone and rather going for a debutant teacher’s choice (where I could have read 5 books); I opted to go for a debutant level. I thought that it is going to be a tough challenge but the outcome of it was extremely fruitful.

This activity meant a lot to me because I wanted to improve my language skills as I was very poor in it. Reading books were the best way to enhance my analyzing and linguistic skills in order to do great in IB.

Doing this activity, made me know that I can also read numerous books with a lot of interest. I exhibited complete dedication and interest towards reading books which let me achieve this great milestone of reading 10 books in a year.

In order to make sure that whether we have read books or not, our supervisor used to take presentations of the book. I could have just read the summary and presented it in front of our supervisor, but knowing the fact that it is wrong I opted to read all 10 books. I didn’t choose the wrong path because I didn’t want to lose an opportunity to enhance my language skills and to have a good command over the language.

Evidences:

1. Book tweet:

“Ninth book of grade 11: Honest Truth about Dishonesty by Dan Ariely

Description: This book talks about how often we unknowingly act dishonestly. Dishonesty is not only stealing  a lump sum of money but taking a pen from your friend without his/her permission is also dishonesty. Therefore, this book suggests ways by which a person can avoid small instances where they are tempted to be dishonest.
Favorite character: The narrator itself, because the ways he showed seemed to be too effective. If I could implement those, I am sure that I would have no issues in my life regarding moral values.
Stylistic device: None
Recommendation: Varun has recommended this book to me, and I would like to recommend this book to people who are beginners as the language used in the book was too easy.”

Athletics Competition

I have been doing athletics since Grade 6, however due to some reasons I left practising it from Grade 9. I have always liked athletics and was inclined towards it and have attended many competitions. CAS gave me another opportunity to start athletics again. At first it seemed very difficult to restart and achieve the level that I used to be at. I faced many difficulties, due to which I felt like giving up always. However, My coach suggested me to find my strengths and weakness and then move ahead with my practices. I followed his advice. The events that I participated in Athletics are short distance running (100m and 200m) and jumping (long jump). I made a list of things that I lacked at and the exercises that needs to be done and finally make them my strengths.

On the other hand I made sure all my strengths are being polished simultaneously.  Listing down my strengths and weakness helped me evaluate my performance better and also help to enhance my performance. I realised that I could run fast, but I lacked in stamina required for it. I knew my strides were in coordinations, however, my fists were always closed. These small details that I encountered, assisted me to analyse my performance and to make it better. It was a tough challenge for me to retain the skills that I had and at the same time also develop new skill. This analysis done by me, helped me to focus on specific areas of trainings that I had to undertake. It was difficult for me to workout, exercise as I had lost the habit of doing so.

I soon realised that I should not be giving up on this. It took time for me  to adjust to this training schedule. At first it was very difficult, however slowly and gradually I got used to it. I would sense the change myself, and felt cheerful when I was able to achieve my targets My bigger aim was to win the competition, therefore I was committed to my practice sessions. Not only the practising but I made sure, I eat accordingly and also take rest so that my muscles are relaxed and I do not face any injuries. I made sure I attend practice sessions and followed the instructions given by my coach. The drills were quite difficult for me, however the exercises were easy. When I performed the drills, I sensed  that I am not at the same level that I was at earlier. It was very troublesome to complete 5 sets of drills in each practise session. Running 3 sets of 100m made me realised that my speed was slower than before, therefore I any how  needed to speed up my running.

As a result of vigorous training I was able to decrease the timing by two second. I knew that winning the competition, that too in all the three events was not at all easy for me, but I tried to prove myself. I believed in myself, though there was always a part of me which was nervous. At the day of my competition, I knew that I had done enough practice, but acquiring first position in all the three events felt quite challenging. However, I stood first in 200m and long jump and attained second position in 100m.

The french assembly allowed students from both the subject to participate in a event which included preparing  french dishes and decorating the dinning table. This event gave me a chance to explore something I have never explored ,”cooking”. My team consisted of 5 members including me, the first obstacle as a leader I faced was to decide which french dish we were going to prepare because the all members in our team were cooking for the first time, finally I decided to prepare a french dish known as “Caramel potatoes”. Just deciding the dish was the end of the first obstacle hence which gave rise to the second obstacle,”efficiency”. As the time limit was very short we had to work efficiently and cooperatively to prepare the dish hence we were able to overcome this obstacle by working collaboratively and showing commitment for the activity everybody was working collaboratively and showing commitment because all of us wanted to learn this new skill therefore all the staff members were cooperative enough to finish the job.The dish prepared by us was delicious according to the audience, this creativity allowed us to explore our strength in the areas like cooking and how to overcome the challenges faced by developing new skills like how to work collaboratively and efficiently while preparing a dish. The only challenged faced my me as the leader was the to assign the different task to my team member because this was the first time we were cooking as a team hence I decided to rotate in every 10 min therefore every member of the team was able to do every task.

HINDI DIVAS

This was my first experience of planning an event  for grade 11 and grade 12 students of our school .This event was for awaring people about the importance of hindi language. In this event there were three activities:

    • Arre Bhai Kehna Kya Chahte Ho?(One person from each team acts out a given song – (1 minute per song).2 songs will be given per team. 20 points for each right guess)
    • .Yeh Konsa Dialogue?(  Each time will be shown an incomplete dialogue. They need to come up with the complete dialogue. )

  • 7-min Ka Jalwa (Both the teams are supposed to entertain the crowd to the maximum. Each team will be given 10 dares they need to fulfil in their performance.)

This was an event organised by our teachers but was planned and carried out by me ,abhishek and our sub -leaders.First of all we planned the activities which we were going to include in the event then we appointed sub-leaders for planning the activities which we decided. The planning of the above mentioned activity were  very challenging for me as I was required to co-ordinate with the teachers as well as with our sub-leaders as to  inform them about the criteria  ,collect all the resources required etc.The jobs which I was asked to handle was too much for me which made my activity more tough.I was also able to identify my strengths and weakness as I was handling  the assembly  jobs along  with  my other jobs .Then I was also able to develope the skill of working planning an event  collaboratively as this event was totally dependent upon collaboration . My toughest challenge in the whole activity was to show commitment towards my work  which I think I did very well .And also the main aim  of the whole event was to inform/aware  people about the importance of hindi language ,its role in our life etc.

Also while planning and conducting the activities we specially took care of the ethics involved in this activity as we decided upon ,that while conducting the activity we will not any person , religion, cast. The most difficult task of the whole event was to control the students and as a member of the organising committee we faced a lot of problems ,but  somehow  we managed that by either setting certain rules or by taking strict steps. In the end we can say that the activity was very successful. Everybody who came over there enjoyed the activity and also me and my team got appreciation from our teachers and friends. Although the planning of the  activity was quite stressful but at the end it was good to see that we made it .And also the best part of the experience was seeing rich smile on the faces of friends while the activity was going on and also watch the activity move on smoothly and firmly as we expected it to be.
