Jersey Designing for Zero Gravity (Creativity)

My friend, Harshil, and I had volunteered to design a jersey for our Ultimate team (Zero Gravity). Our team did not have a personal jersey, for a long time, and so we thought it was important for us to design a new one. We wanted to make something very cool, and so in the end we decided to go superhero themed. Once we started working we realised that it was not possible for us to design the jersey, so we took help from Khusbhu Thakur.

This activity taught me immense time management skills. We had been running late for all our deadlines as we did not prioritise. Later, we pulled up our socks and finished it considerably late. But, the upside was that Khusbhu ma’am and Harshil were very cooperative and worked even during the holidays (including me). Even though we got the jersey on the day of the tournament, we were happy that we could design such an amazing jersey for our fellow players.

The one thing that this activity taught me was to be committed to work/ people all the time. Had we left working during our holidays, we wouldn’t have seen so many happy faces. We raised people’s excitement even before we started working, just by saying “we are designing a new Superhero themed jersey for 0G”. Therefore, it became a serious task for us to reach their high hopes.

The cost price of the jerseys were 450 and 650, but we sold them at 500 and 700, respectively, to gain some funds for Jhumbish. We got a decent amount of Rs. 3000/- by the end, but then we encountered a problem. A few people’s jerseys were misplaced even before they got them and so we had to make sure we repaid them. This taught me the second like lesson of being ethical at all times. We repaid them the complete amount and did not take any money for funds.

In a nutshell, this activity was fun and riveting. I got to see many happy faces.

Surat City Half Marathon (Activity/Service)

SCHM hosted their first ever race on 13th September 2015 and a few of us volunteered to help them at the pit stops, to provide energy drinks and water bottles to the runners. We were very excited about the whole event and reached our venue in time. But, to our surprise, our pit stop wasn’t as fascinating as everybody else’s, we just had small tables and only water bottles as supplies. However, this didn’t really stop us from frantically jumping around the road in wait of the runners.

This activity definitely taught me a very important skill of multitasking. During the event all of us were opening up boxes, preparing the table, uncapping the bottles, passing them to the runners and hooting for their encouragement, all at the same time. It was a tiring job, but the excitement didn’t give us any negative feelings.

This activity helped all the runners a lot. We were not only providing them water, we were giving them pure motivation to run and finish their goal. In the end we went to another pit stop to give the runners a refreshing water bath. The happiness was enough of a reward for us.

There were runners from ages 12 to 70 and it was more motivating for us than astonishing. This was a life lesson I learnt. ‘There is no age for your passion (sports)’. This activity has changed me for better, at least it gave me some motivation to wake up early and practice for something that I am really passionate about.

Foosball Table (Creativity/Activity)

Vitan, Aarsh and I made a Foosball table as a part of our ‘Arts Special’ project for Marker’s Space. We made a low priced Foosball table for unofficial use.

The first very important skill I learnt was patience. We were already running quite late on our schedule and then we finally started making the actual table a week before the exhibition. Making the frame of the table took us ages, we had a feeling that we would never finish it. But once the frame was made, we were satisfied that at least one job is ticked off the list. All other steps were very important but didn’t take a lot of time, but they were delicate, so we had to be fast and careful at once.

I learnt my life lesson that only people who know how the work is actually done should do it. Kirit bhaiya (carpenter of our school) helped us immensely to put that table together, and we gave him the liberty to take all the decisions for our table. From gluing to drilling and cutting he kept suggesting us and we kept agreeing to everything.

The table work was never over. Three days before the exhibition we were getting our Men 3D printed, a day before the exhibition we were rushing to get LEDs and sensors, and that was not it even an hour before the exhibition we were trying to fix the LEDs and Men. But all of this did not matter once we had our first ever game on the table. Everybody who played on it went with a smile, and that made us happy. They enjoyed, hooted, supported and appreciated.

This activity, like every other long term activity gave me a reality check on how much I procrastinate and mismanage my time. But it also gave me an assurance that I don’t leave things, I complete them even if they are last minute.

Ride with Pride

The concept of Ride with Pride is really interesting. It was Cyclothon for spreading awareness about breast cancer. It was organized on 6th  March 2016. Being a girl I believed it was kind of a responsibility to make people aware about breast cancer and so I decided to volunteered in the event and help my peers who were organizing this event so that I can help them (as they were facing a shortage of volunteers) at the same time help them in spreading awareness about breast cancer (engage myself in a issue of global significance).

I volunteered to help them at registration desk and other jobs (small tasks as the major ones were handled by big and experience people that were appointed on that day) on the event day that like spreading leaflets about why this event was organized and what it aimed. But as we were doing this job, I realized that people that are participating in Ride with Pride were more interested in cycling and not only this, we saw few people throwing away those leaflets.

This is one of the ethical concern I came across because the organizers thought that everyone who is participating might be interested in gaining knowledge about breast cancer and so they printed a lot of leaflets but as mentioned above none of the participants were interested (in being aware about the cause) so there was a lot of paper wastage. On the registration desk I was not working alone there were three more people with me so we divided our work so that we can cater to all the participants properly and as fast as we can. One of us was registering participants on the spot and another was making sure whether the participants that have come to participate in the event have already registered or not.

Though the event was a big  success but it might have failed to achieve its aim which was to spread awareness about breast cancer. But the good part was that a lot of people participated in the cyclothon which in turn helped us raising a good amount of money for donating for breast cancer patients (as per my information). Also everyone at the event enjoyed the event thoroughly including me.

Activity 1: Lit.Hum Fest (CREATIVITY)

The concept of Literature and Humanities Fest was introduced this year in our school. the basic concept was to promote literature and humanities through varied fun activities. I organized two activities one of them was “Scrabble Wall”.

I am not really a fan of scrabble nor am I so interested in literature. This was the first challenge I faced  because I had to devote my free slots and play time to pull off an activity that I was not interested in or passionate about so this thought of me giving up my free time in a thing that did not interest me hold me back from giving my 100% towards organizing this activity. I had to pull this thing of with a partner so it was necessary that we coordinated well. But because she was in 10th she was busy most of the time as she had her boards this year. Initially, we weren’t able to put our best efforts. So there was a lack of coordination among both of us that delayed our work and made me anxious and at times, I messed things up. once I made a mistake while preparing the posters for our activity and once my partner had the duty to prepare charts for scrabble wall which she forgot and hadn’t done it like we planned and so we had to do it again. But then my partner made me realized that it wasn’t too late and we can still put up good activity.

After that I think we were able to coordinate well with each other because now that we understood each other we were able to divide work in such a way that it does not affect our other stuff (like at times when we had to meet our mentor teachers for updating and discussing our progress I volunteered to go alone as she had few tests during that time which were important for her and sometimes she did extra work because i had to complete some urgent submissions)  and tried to give our 100% and  also gave our free time not only at school but we also did few things from home as well and completed our work before our deadline. After going through this I had realized that how important teamwork is and how necessary it is to understand each other in order to ensure that the things go smoothly and as planned.

The second challenge was that students weren’t really interested in the fest like me but were dedicated towards earning points for their respective houses (the only reason so many students showed their interest in Lit.Hum fest) but the activity that we were organizing wouldn’t help them earn those points as it was a fun activity and so it was very difficult to convince students to participate in it. As a result, it was not a big hit initially nor in the later stage but after some time we received better responses from students than earlier as our mentor teacher Smruti ma’am started playing herself with few of her grade 12 students which encouraged others to come and play. earlier when did not receive any response I panicked and was really sad as it was the very first time I volunteered to organize something on my own and it failed. The idea of failure highly demotivated me but then I realized that it was my first try (we all learn from mistakes right!) and now because I have experienced it once I will have a good idea how to go about organizing an event.

The kids from grade 7 and 8 didn’t quite understand it and were playing it their way. I didn’t try to stop them because at the end what would matter is that they had fun (right!). And once in awhile a lot, them cheated as well in order to win those badges that we gave to those who win but again it the aim was that these kids should enjoy so we gave them badges even though we knew that they cheated. So this was like an ethical issue.

Planning this event was a challenge for me because I haven’t done anything like this before but taught me few things: I learned to keep calm in situations that are not wanted and handle them wisely and smartly. Overall, I am satisfied with my performance.

Creative Mela – Card Making Workshop

Art and Craft in one such thing that I love doing. I and one of my junior were in charge for Organizing Card Making Workshop in Creative Mela. Even though not everyone was excited about the Creative Mela because they had to give up their precious weekend but I was actually very excited as card making is something I love doing and I did not mind giving up my weekend for this.

As soon as I was given my activity that I had to organize (Card Making) I started planning about what was I going to teach those who will opt for my workshop. A lot of ideas started flooding my head at once. In this process, I tried something different that I hadn’t done with quilling before (hence trying to expand my knowledge about quilling and experimenting with it). I had planned a lot of things but then I was informed that we had very limited time so that actually reducing my enthusiasm (But then I convinced myself every little activity is worth your time and deserves the same excitement if you enjoy doing it).

I faced a challenge as well. Like all tasks were equally divided between me and my partner but unfortunately, she failed to teach and every one of them, I tried pushing her to do them but it didn’t quite work so at last out of frustration I informed the event coordinators about the same. They gave her a warning but even then I had to complete my work as well as hers. So I had to put double efforts and give more time ( taking away my studying time sometimes). But on the event day, i think we worked together well as we divided the kids into two groups and managed them pretty well ( Because even she realised it won’t work now if she didn’t work sincerely and helped me considerably well in pulling off this workshop)

There were several activities like card making organised in Creative Mela whose main purpose was to teach these students something new and hence help them develop a new skill but then there was this kid in my workshop and in my group who didn’t actually do anything by himself. Even Though I told everyone they had to do everything on their own but I did all of his work (because even after telling him or forcing him he didn’t do anything so I had to do it for him as he a so stubborn that he wanted to something different from everyone else so I think I was partial as  I did all of his work and at the same time did something different from what other kids were doing). This was an ethical issue that I came across.
But lastly what mattered was that I as well as students in workshop all enjoyed thoroughly and everyone learned something new and I also covered three aspects of my CAS that were Activity, Creativity and Service ( Because we had put our time and efforts for organizing this workshop for these students as well as helping them in developing a new skill without getting anything in return by volunteering for it)

Tree Plantation Activity

As an ESS (one of our IB subjects) student I am well versed with the current environmental conditions on Earth and therefore the importance and the exigency for afforestation. The government of Gujarat initiated a project to build “Artificial forest” in Vansda. The artificial forest was named as “Janki van”.

We started off at around 7 or 8 in the morning and might have worked for around 4 to 5 hours approximately. We started with getting briefed about how they had planned to plant trees around that patch of land and how things were supposed to be done.

We were soon divided into two sizeable groups and as soon as we started our respective jobs starting with planting saplings and then later going on other activities like watering the saplings, adding fertilizers and covering them I realized that planting seeds were not a child’s play. It needs proper skills to accomplish this task properly ( for instance: the saplings should be watered correctly, The saplings should be planted perpendicular to the ground or right amount of fertilizers should be given). It was very tedious and strenuous task and however I knew that planting is something that does not belong to my comfort zone (as I don’t like working in soil especially wet soil and water) but then I made myself understand that few tasks should be done not because one enjoys doing them but because that are essential, crucial and of significant value.

Through this, I learned to step out of my comfort zone for things that were necessary without considering my personal benefits. This plantation activity forced me to believe that no task is small or big and hence made me respect the workers working (changing my ideological belief that planting is an easy job) with us because I now knew how difficult their job. There was one instance when I was so tired and frustrated as it was a very tedious task and I was exhausted that just wanted to skip the responsibilities given to me ( like at time of helping the other group in their jobs) so i out of vexation i did not do the work like it was supposed to be done (placing plants at  proper distances from each other) but then I reminded myself that this was a blessing in disguise ( as it would help us in future) and not only this but also how important teamwork is and that worked an incentive to help my peers who were as tired as me. This also portrayed our commitment towards our job as even though we were tired we continued doing our job in order to accomplish our objectives and took very limited breaks.

At one end we were doing something good for the environment but at the same time the plastic bags that were used to transport the saplings that we planted were going to be disposed of somewhere. ( This is another ethical issue that I came across because at one end we plant trees contributing to the environment and at the other end we dispose of plastic we will cause more harm to nature)

At the end what mattered was that It taught me few very important lessons of my life and also helped me it completing two criteria of CAS (activity and service).

Vansda trip

DSCN2448DSCN2463DSCN2445

Our school had initiated  a CAS trip for us to Janki van . The undertaking for us was to assist in the manor process. The minute I came to think about this CAS trip I was prepared to go. I cherish getting dirty in mud and with planting trees it came as an inseparable unit. This outing really made me understand that it is so difficult to work and that it’s not in any manner simple to work in sun throughout the day. I thought it would be truly fun and plain cruising yet no it wasn’t. We needed to dig in a few places and sow the plant there. We likewise needed to transport the plants from one place to the other  which was truly tiring. Conveying that overwhelming hatchet made me contemplate upon the amount of quality is expected to simply plant and how they may have dealt with the majority of that. It made me empathetic  towards laborers and brought more respect for them as they worked hard each day. I likewise connected workers and treated them equally and came to know about plants and manure from them.

We worked cooperatively and attempted to lessen the work by working in a group so when we needed to transport the plants starting with one place then onto the next we stacked and after that passed the plants starting with one individual then onto the next so we didn’t need to move which made the work less tiring furthermore devoured less time. I was euphoric and felt sheer satisfaction after the work was done and I am additionally anticipating planting trees in my own terrace

Ethics came into picture as i had to take care while interacting with workers that I dont hurt their sentiments and do a effective job

Organising and conducting the Maths Science Trivia

This event was an initiative by our school where our Math and Science teachers gave us various responsibilities and helped us conduct the event for Grade 9 & 10. The event included a preliminary round and a final round. The final round consisted of a complete presentation showing all the distinct rounds.

The number of questions that had to be made for Mathematics and Science was appalling. As the event coordinators and the hosts, we had tons of responsibilities. I’d anticipated that making all the questions would be the toughest part, but we figured out that if everyone put in the required amount of hard work, there would be no problem. However, making questions turned out to be the least of our worries. There was an extreme lack of coordination between us, and no one was ready to give up time for the event.

We kept procrastinating, and the result was that just two days before the trivia, the questions were in an abysmal condition. There were repetitive questions, and everything was extremely unorganised. But then final two days of hard work and dedication helped us make the event a great success. Working with this team also made us realise that while organising events such like these, things don’t often go the way we want them to, however, it also taught us the importance of other people’s opinion over ours and how our personal thoughts can be relatively narrow and a 2nd perspective can broaden our points of view and help us make and event better and more enjoyable.

DSCN0339

The trivia proved to be an enormous challenge. The audience was uncontrollable, but the event went on smoothly in the end. Working for the event in the last minute taught me how to handle last minute crisis like taking preventive measures for the audience to keep them from prompting and keeping an extra stopwatch if the first one was too stop woking at the end moment. It also taught me how to function well under stressful conditions with a team.

Not being partial towards people belonging to my house or my friends was the ethical consideration I kept in mind throughout I did this by not giving them easier questions or more time to answer than the rest. This event helped me take a step forward in getting over my fear of stage speaking. Conducting the event along with my team gave me a feeling of triumph and its success was heartfelt. After the event, the audience and teachers appreciated our efforts. Overall, I’m glad the I got such a great opportunity to organize this event and was able to make it entertaining and enjoyable.DSCN0363

A day with the orphan Kids.

Charlie’s Help age came to our school to spend a day with us. We planned various fun and exciting activities for them. Their trip to our school was planned by Krishna Ma’am and she helped make the day very interactive for them and us. There were 36 children aged between 3 and 17. Their arrival had been delayed by one and a half hour, which put us largely behind schedule. This made us reduce the time required for some activities and we had to cut down on some. Each one of them was talented in their own unique way. Not even once did we see a slight bit of despair when they met us and saw how we studied. Rather they were delighted to be there and very enthusiastic to perform whatever we had planned for them.

We made some very great friends in that little time we had and enjoyed thoroughly. Besides the delay, the entire day went as planned. That day made me realise the benefits of the privileges I receive every day and the love care and affection provided by my parents. These children were extremely talented and if given a stage appropriate enough to showcase it, they would beat all expectations. We learnt how people from different backgrounds perceive the meaning of various situations in different ways and react differently. In all, the day spent with and for them was brilliant and enlightened me in different ways and I’m looking forward to the next time we get an opportunity to meet them. We developed new skills by working collaboratively with the students from Charlie’s help age. We did this by not only adhering to what we had planned for them but also asking them as to what they wanted to do. We learnt a lot from the children that day when some of them taught us a new way to communicate that is by signs. They made us realise how we must respect, love and treat with care everything we have. We also exhibited perseverance and commitment to the service by coming up with interesting ideas to make their visit to our school as memorable as possible and giving in our best to help our teachers out. We also exhibited perseverance and commitment to the service by coming up with interesting ideas to make their visit to our school as memorable as possible and giving in our best to help our teachers out. We also undertook a new challenge as difference in the cultural background made it a little difficult for interaction initially however we still managed to form a great bond with them. We maintained an ethical outlook towards the visit by not delaying and treating them as equal to us.
