CAS Essay

The most striking one is obviously my project work which is organising the entire Surat Ultimate Open(SUO) 2015. The catch was that we wanted to do something completely different, which means more work to get the desired effect.

Another activity that comes into my is Football. Throughout these 2 years of IB, i’ve attended various competitions and have been practising weekly at last. Football, I have realised is one thing that keeps me sane. With all the deadlines and submissions, some sort of physical exercise keeps me energetic.

There are IB learner profiles that could be connected to the learning from CAS activities, such as:

Risk-taker – when I had to play basketball with an entirely new team and a completely new sport.

Communication – communicating with the team members is important (FS 3/3)

Balance – As I give equal importance to sports and education, it becomes vital that I set a balance in time required for both of them.

One thing I have instilled within me that you shouldn’t leave a single opportunity to appreciate anyone. What my project work basically taught me that complain about someone person to person, but when you have to appreciate them, do it in front of everyone. This really creates a good impression plus is makes me feel good.

I have become more patient with everything. I was known to be very impatient. But not so anymore. I believe that is because of all the activities that I have done so far.

I faced a lot of difficulties through these activities, however, whenever I needed help with anything there always was someone to guide me the right way. When I was stuck with deciding volunteers for SUO, I had lot of internal problems. I needed someone to help me sort me off.

Learning outcome 6 was the most difficult to achieve which is demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance. However, i was able to achieve that in some of the cases such as when I went to play Subroto cup, Literature fest, Naggar trip, Karma kitchen and VA.

Math-Science Trivia

You must do the very thing you think you cannot do. – Eleanor Roosevelt

dscn0336The Fountainhead senior school Math-Science inter-house quiz was conducted on 25th of April, and students from Diploma 1 chose to volunteer as quizmasters. I had never participated in such events in senior school, but this year due to an opportunity given to me to take over the quiz show; I was overjoyed at the idea of conducting this event. We were a group of 4 people who conducted the quiz event for Grade 9 and Grade 10. Through this activity I wanted to enhance my own math and science skills plus share my knowledge with my juniors. So, about how the quiz proceeded – there were 2 rounds in which both the grades had to participate mandatorily to give a test and whomsoever won went to the second round. Here for the final round only 2 teams from each grade of all the houses were present.

Here, few of my strengths like, working collaboratively and having good research skills were showcased. I think i worked pretty hard while searching questions for the tests and the final presentation, as I made sure I put my best efforts for this activity. However, I think I was not confident enough, as we were also supposed to host the quiz. But, trying to motivate myself and having helpful co-event partners helped me boost my confidence. plus, because there were like 150-200 students it was difficult for us to manage this huge crowd. However, we asked the teachers to split in the entire auditorium so that there were no chances of chaos left.

dscn0361 dscn0323

For how the activity was planned, the four of us divided the work between us so that it is easier and less time consuming for us. Plus, for the presentations and the tests that we made, we were supposed to get it cross-checked from the teachers and many a times it was inconvenient as the teachers and us were not free at the same time. Moreover, it was difficult for us to search questions that were from the syllabi of these two grades. But, at the end we worked though it quite well and the event was satisfying and pleasing enough.

For this activity, it was VERY IMPORTANT for us to be ethical, while taking the test and presentation. Few of the questions were taken from the internet and few from our prior knowledge, so it was mandatory for us to make sure that we site all the sources. Plus, while hosting the quiz, in the presentation round, I was marking down their points. Therefore, I had to make sure that I marked and summed up their total properly.

Overall, I think i learnt a lot of new things through this activity. My stage fear and time management skills were improved, whilst my research skills were appreciated. So, I think all that i learnt is going to help me in my near future.

Subroto States – Third time state champions maybe?

Place: Mahisagar, Gujarat

Date: 7th, 8th and 9th September 2015

It was a long ride, we were expected to reach around 6 in the evening. Nobody was sure whether we would win the competition this time (as we have been winning since last 2 years and then going for Nationals) because we didn’t have all the best players of the team. We had a new goal keeper with whom we played for the first time. Also that we didn’t have any practice together as a team, so we lacked coordination. On the way, I saw these beautiful meadows covered in waste. Plastic, old clothes, rotten food and other junk. Then we decided that any waste that we have, we’ll throw it in the dustbin only. Our country, our responsibility. These small actions have at least a minor global impact. We reached and we all were horror-struck. The ground was small and in the middle of the it was a cricket pitch (of concrete), so if we fell we would be severely injured. The accommodations that they provided for the teams to stay were terrible. One room, 2 fans, 18 girls, 2 coaches, dirty floor, dirty mattresses. How can one live in that? We went looking for a decent hotel to spend the night.

Next morning, we reached the field, applied loads of sunscreen. As I am a regular football player and attend many state level competition, I have made many friends from across India, especially in Gujarat form all cities. When I met them there, I got more nervous, they knew me and so the pressure to perform good was heavy. Their team coaches also knew me and wished us luck. I was scared about my performance, we hadn’t practiced as a team, more specifically I wanted my game to be great.

First match against Anand, fromt the first minute we got to know that we were stronger than them, so we decided to develop coordination between our team members. After scoring 2 goals, our main aim was to pass accurately and make attempts to score. Anwer sir was kinda satisfied because he thought that it was good to get a easy team to start with so that we all could play more easily with each other. After we won the first match, we were a bit more confident. We won the second match against Kutch. Coach was happy with my game, I played the position of a midfielder and did my job perfectly well. I was satisfied with my performance and extremely tired too.We were all ready for the third match and got the news that the home team hadn’t shown up. We were all pretty confident on winning. Few were also overconfident because we had won this tournament last year, and this time we were already in semi-finals.

Next day, there were blisters on my foot. Everybody was excited yet scared. Few people had started making plans about how much fun they are going to have at nationals. I didn’t play good in this match according to my coach, he constantly kept shouting from outside the field about me making mistakes. I am the main player of the team, the heart of the team – as our coach put it. I take all the kicks and all the throws which made me use all my energy so I was immensely tired. I still tried my best, and after we won and were sitting together where sir admitted that I played tough, which was good to hear after a tiring match.

For the finals I was having a hard time to even keep my eyes open while playing, because I just wanted to sleep. Blisters throbbed and I could pass the ball but not kick it with power. Sir was disappointed with me and that was evident because he constantly kept shouting my name and instructed me what to do. Their attacks were constant and we had started to play a defensive game. Till half-time we had held them back and the score was nil-nil. As the 2nd half began, I couldn’t defend very well so I was sent to strike and a player from the strike was sent for defence. They scored easy goals. Our coordination was less and mistakes were more.

The one thing that we all were very satisfied was the cleanliness that we maintained everywhere we went. We realised that the every action and choice we make has an impact, and it unethical to dirty someone’s home place. It is against our morals.

Overall, it was a great experience. I realised I need to increase my stamina to a great extent because I got tired in the second match itself. The most important thing that I learned was accepting failure. We always win, there is not a single match that I remember that we lost – so losing this was altogether a new experience. It was disappointing and sad, but it was necessary for us to face failure in life and be able to live with that. There is so much a sport can teach you about life.

Creative Mela 2015

Not many of my classmates attended the Creative Mela.  Creative mela takes place every year and the purpose is for everyone (not into arts people also) to indulge themselves into creative activities. This time there were so many activities happening, I could only attend 2 of them: Make up and Graffiti.

I don’t know nothing about ‘makeup’. Literally nothing. I realised that this was the area where I needed to gain more knowledge, hence I attended the session. However, I reached there and then realised that it was theatre makeup and not the normal makeup that people usually do. Though I learnt a lot about theatre makeup, I found it quite monotonous. How actors who are to perform live are always applied with loud makeup and also not so much that their features aren’t visible(as expressions are a must).

After doing graffiti, which is basically spray painting on a wall, I fell in love with it. Especially because we had to do something abstract so I made red liquid dripping off the top and an animal. Both of which were appreciated by m fellows and the guides who were there to help. I identified yet another thing that I really enjoyed doing. Everytime I pass that wall in our school, I recall my getting dirty and climbing up ladders to do that artwork.

One very important that all of very instructed before we began with our graffiti was that we shouldn’t do anything that might offend any race, religion, gender or organization. I think this was because one must consider the ethics of choices and actions.

I always end up enjoying the day to the fullest after Creative Mela. This time too.

FS 3/3 Basketball Tournament

People from outside our city had also participated for this tournament. Basketball is not my main sport. However, because a good team approached and offered me to play with them, I felt good and important, so I participated. They asked me to play with them as they know my athleticism and ability to adapt to any sport easily.

I was nervous as Basketball is a non contact game. I am used to playing a little more rough which may lead to many contact fouls, however, I am so good that I was not substituted not even once in all the matches that we played. I learnt a lot of technical words for various fouls, types of shoots and passes.

Though my main sport in Football, I keep on playing other sports. This is because my coach says that indulging in different sport rejuvenates the mind and different muscles of the body get toned.

I realized the significance of a coordination that is necessary within a team. As I wasn’t a professional player, I wasn’t good at converting passes into the baskets and hence always used to pass the ball more. I never used to do this in football, but now I have realised the importance of passing the ball instead of just being selfish. I felt so great that I was able to learn something about football by playing basketball.

It was a fun day. I made a lot of new friends and though we didn’t, I was satisfied with my game.

CAS- Essay

CAS was my favorite core component out of three. I love the whole idea and aim of this subject,  Creativity, Action, and Service which was done for 18 long months really help me to rejuvenate myself.

The first activity that comes to my mind when I think about CAS is my CAS project that I organized which was about spending a day special kids. This is an event which is very close to my heart as this was a very first time where I initiated an event. Though this event is very close to my heart this a very difficult event, we faced many problems before, during and after the event however those problems gave me more experience and showed me the areas where I had to improve and also helped me to develop the person I am today. One of the main reasons why this event is special because my partner and I were able to give a stage to normal students to spend time and do activities with special kids and be a part of their life.

I have learnt a lot from CAS like- having patience, time management, cooperation, but most importantly going out of comfort zone. Each and every activity made me go out of my comfort zone, it was hard but it beneficial as it gave huge amount experience that I could use for my future and also helped me to develop myself. Every activity was a learning experience for me and a whole new insight into myself. The Service activities made me more open-minded, reflective, caring and tolerant to the world around. In addition, I also realized how important being a good communicator and a well-balanced student was.

In these 18 long months I have learnt tons and tons of different things which always helped me to grow better as a person. Before going into IB I was never a good communicator, I never went out of my comfort zone to do something, but after joining IB and doing CAS I developed and learnt many new things like- Never giving up, taking risks, developing myself of being a balanced student between studies and extracurricular activities and the most important going out of my comfort zone. As I learnt many things from CAS I also faced many difficulties from doing CAS like- I never took risk in any activity because I was too scared to fail but CAS has taught me that “Failure is not a problem, it’s a learning process” which means that there will be tons and tons of problems thrown at your way but the most important thing is how you tackle those problems and win.

The learning outcomes were really helpful in understanding the purpose and end goal of the experience and each activity. However, there were a few LOs that were difficult to achieve like- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance, but I engaged myself into activities were either about working collaboratively or developing areas for growth. Activities that came under Service were only ticking off the sixth learning outcome and I didn’t really indulge myself in Service related activities too much. But when I got to know the importance of this learning outcome I realized the importance of it and conducted my CAS project on it.

As this core component has helped me a lot, I would 100% recommend doing it because this only helps a person in being a better version of themselves as well as making a better version of the society and the environment that we live in. CAS has helped me immensely in developing myself toward being a responsible, time managing, patient and overall being a good person, Although it has its own difficulties, but the final outcome is seen in myself and is very special.

Being Teacher For the first Time!

On 5th September 2015 ,I took part in a event where the students of my grade became teachers for half a day and conducted lessons in the first grade. I am a kind of person who always likes to try new things in life and when I heard about this activity I was very excited because I have never took part in an activity like this before and by enrolling in this activity I will learn something new from it which could help me in future too. I always wanted to be a teacher and teach children and when I got the opportunity to do it I was one of the first person to unroll for. There were total 39 students who participated in this event and we had to conduct class in pairs.

Before the event started me and my partner decided on what activities we will do while conducting the class and also divided the roles between us. We mutually decided on our roles equally so that there will not be someone alone without work. We also made sure that the activities that we were going to do were appropriate for the kids. Before the event started my partner and I made sure that we understand how to behave with the kids so that there will no problems faced during the event. As the event started we went to our class and started with our activities. During the event we made sure that we utilize the resources properly and try not waste them.

The activities that we decided To do

  • Introduction(Interaction with kids- Introducing themselves)
  • Read aloud
  • Musical chairs
  • Small indoor games
  • Passing the parcel
  • Poster making
  • Dance

The event was going very good, everyone was having fun and the kids were also participating in the activities. However we started facing problems when my partner could not continue due to some reasons and left the class, so I had to also cover for him and had the handle 20 first grader kids. At that time I was very tensed and got nervous because I had to do my roles as well as my partner’s roles. However as time passed I gained confidence and came up with some new ideas which helped me to manage the class more easily- Like I divided the class in groups where kids would do different activities in different groups so there will be no cluster in the class and everything will be managed systematically and less time consuming. Then the event ended, everybody came out of their allotted classes. I was personally very proud of myself as I learnt many new things, we also made sure that we behave in a certain was as those kids were in the first grade and I was also proud of myself as I passed on my knowledge to the kids which I never did before. I was fully focused in the event and I personally made sure I don’t waste resources and tried not break any school property and especially I tried not to behave inappropriately towards the kids, because I feel kids learn from their elder ones and if I acted inappropriately then they’ll learn from it and will do the same in future to their juniors.

I learnt a lot of this from this event

  • Problem Solving- I developed a new skill that I never knew I had in me which is problem solving. When my partner left the class for some time I was very tensed and was also constantly thinking of solutions but as time passed I came up with a solution which helped a lot.
  • Being Patient- One of the biggest task of this event was being patient with those kids, because they were in the first grade and we had to make them understand the activity in their way which sometimes became hard for us.
  • Quick Thinking-  When the problem arrived I had to make quick changes in the class and had to make changes in the activities that we were doing.

Overall I learnt many new things from this event and I truly enjoyed this event!!!

CAS Profile

img_2044

BASICS:

My name is Riya Shah. I study in Fountainhead school and am in year 2 of IB. I have taken English language literature, Business management, and Psychology as my HL and Hindi B, Mathematics and Environmental systems and societies as my SL. As it is evident from my subject choices, I am more inclined towards humanities and subjects that inculcate human interaction and deal with human experiences.

Apart from school, I am found either debating, dancing or singing.

I have always been a talker, and over the years with increasing knowledge, I seem to have an opinion about almost everything. Being dominant and persuasive, I am more inclined towards activities like Model United Nations, and parliaments.

I don’t quite remember what got me dancing, I remember moving my legs and shaking my hips since I was about 5. Dancing is legitimately the only thing that I would energetically do even at 3 in the morning. Though I have barely had formal training in dance, I am not that bad altogether.

Singing is something that I began when I entered elementary school, primarily because a teacher came over to teach my elder brother. Over the years, I seemed to love the sense of belonging I felt with music and that’s how it became and still is one of my favorite hobbies.

I would want to keep doing and improving in the three things listed above!

LIFE:

I have a very philosophical perspective towards life, I believe in thinking and questioning all the possibilities and repercussions our actions can have. In addition to that, one of the strongest belief I hold is that each and every person on this planet has a purpose, and the potential to accomplish that purpose if given the right growing and learning conditions. Having said that, I strongly believe that amongst many other social groups, women are a group that is one of the least fortunate as far as freedom for exercising one’s own potential is concerned. I, as a person can no more see women being objectified, demeaned or silenced in the society. Thus, I would always want to be a feminist in order to first raise the level of women to that of men and then pull both the genders to a greater equal freedom.

In order to accomplish my purpose sometime in my life, I staunchly think I need to improve my listening skills, my commitment and my tolerance and acceptance of people and the society at face value. Therefore, I would really want to get involved in activities that fall under either education and/or gender equality.

DREAMS:

I am a fan of adventures that thrill me, with a great certainty that I will not die. I don’t fear ANY roller coasters, and it’s my dream to ride some of the most dangerous and thrilling roller coasters of the world. With that, my top 3 dreams would hands down be Sky Diving, Deep Sea Diving, and Bungee Jumping! I would also want to travel places that have different cultures and societal norms than my existing society. I want to meet, interact and understand various people around the world and establish a connection irrespective of the endless barriers.
