CAS Profile

I am Parvashi Naik. Currently, I am in a constant battle between IB and Social life like all other IB students. Till now I have celebrated 16 birthdays on 8th of October. I spent my middle and high school life in Fountainhead School, Surat. I belong from the Western part of India and that is Gujarat.
By now, I have pursued and developed a lot of talents and skills. Apart from academics, I play Basketball and Football in school. After 6-8 years of learning, I finished my Arangetram in the Indian classical Dance Bharatnatyam. I am an amateur Alpine Skier and a Scuba Diver. I finished my my Advance course in Communication Skills from Trinity College of London. Not only that, but I play Keyboard and drums too. Visual Arts is one of my other talents too that I have recently realised. Learning management through school event is also one of the fresh talents I came across.
I enjoy all the things that make me happy. May it be a person, an activity or a form of entertainment. They have changed by time but currently I enjoy doing visual arts as it is that one fresh skill I am performing as a part of my IB course too.
Visual arts is one skill/talent that I wish to improve upon apart.
I also like planning and executing school and other events and being a part of the Organisation committee.
Coming to what my aim right now is to get into a good university and succeed. Apart from this, I wish to learn, explore and experience different aspects of the unseen world.
I am not someone who is too much inclined towards global issues but social issues that occur sometimes between the family or friends, I am concerned as those people involved or my involvement in it, those people concerns me.
I have always wanted to be work and study. Like, a part-time job where I earn from my hardwork and determination towards my responsibility and take out expenses for my survival. That is one thing I wish to do in my life.
This was all about me and I guess this is sufficient enough for not only understanding me but also my CAS profile.

CAS Essay

CAS has been a fun learning experience for me. I was always inclined a lot towards co-curricular activities. May it be Arts, sports or social service. Before opting or knowing IB, my hobbies and co-curricular activities were things that concerned me because I was afraid that probably I would have to drop them because High school is one of the most important phase in life. But, CAS is like that one requirement of IB that is a stress buster and is fun. It has given me an opportunity to enhance my talent and continue my exploration and learning in the non-academic world. During my CAS Experience, I attended Subroto Football Tournament at district and state level, attended a plantation activity at vasnda, organised a Basketball 3 on 3 event as a part of my project work, became a part of the organising committee in FSMUN in our school, worked as an intern at Span Design Organisation for a month, learnt Corel Draw software, took part in an eye checkup camp affiliated with Rotary Club and spending time with special kids.

Coming to my CAS Experience, it has been great. One of the best achievement and the best learning part was my CAS project. From just an idea to the real event, it was a great journey. I got know about how people really are, what kind attitude we need to have in front of different kinds of people, how a sport event is actually conducted etc. Not only that but I also enjoyed learning different skills in all the three strands creativity, activity and service. Learning Corel draw, Attending an Internship and different service projects. It was a great learning experience all together.

CAS wasn’t just a learning experience, it was way more than that. Our morals, honesty and values were built, knowing what was right and wrong and building of problem solving skills was very helpful and worth. Knowing how much vital role our ethics play in all the situation is one thing I understood which I think is farmost the most important thing you learn in life.

CAS was not only something that was beneficial to me. It benefitted me as an individual, but a society as a whole. The service projects I did, helped the environment and the needy people. Contributing to these random act of kindness as a purpose to finish my CAS requirement, it gave me a feeling of happiness and a proud moment wherein I contributed to an act of kindness to the society. This made me realise that everything is not just done because it is required, there things that are done because they make you happy and proud, probably not at that particular moment, but later in life.

There were many incident which I came across during my CAS experience which I were life long learning experience for me. During my planning for FS 3/3, we were in search of sponsors. In that case we had a deal with one of the sponsors and then were betrayed by them due to some trust issues, that was the day when we realised everytime we trust someone in case of money or business or something like that, we’ve got to be very careful and take signatures in written to avoid problems in future. That is when our ethics played a role, after negotiation with the higher authority from the school asked the assigned person to pay but then, we the tournament directors mutually decided on not taking those money that we were given unwillingly with so much of grudge. There also came a time during the event day when one team raised protest against the other claiming they were above age. So, that was one problem that I came across for the first time but handled it pretty well probably. So incidents like this, build not only my confidence or problem solving skills, but also makes me a better and a honest person. At the end, that is what that counts.

CAS was a overall a very helpful programme set by the IB in order to make us balanced in terms of our academics and extracurricular activities, making all of us good at all the three important aspects that are creativity, activity and service.

FSMUN 2.0_28-29/11/15

After a grand Success of first edition of FSMUN, that is the Fountainhead School Model United Nations, FSMUN 2.0 is back. I was the OC Head for Utilities last year and took up the same responsibility as I recognized it to be developed strength in organising department.

There were some changes in the responsibilities this time. A significant change for me was that this time I had to share my OC Head position with my friend. Both of us, had to work together with more responsibilities. Our goal was to buy the best quality stationery for people participating in the minimal amount of money. Second goal was to make our work as organised as possible in order to save time and make it easier for the logistics and the registration team to do their jobs. I have always been someone who finds ways to keep things very simple. I thought using same skills here to make our work easy. The preparations started 3-4 months before the event.

Both of us, the Utilities OC Heads, divided our work to meet all the deadlines. The director and the secretary general seemed to be happy with our work as we were committed and finished all our work with our efforts and passion. We sacrificed our holiday to finish extra work and help other departments too. It was a good opportunity for me to get exposure of different departments. As I already had experience of my own CAS Project work, I gave suggestions and my own inputs in order to help the OC and also for the betterment of the event as a whole.

We, the whole OC faced challenges like having less count of delegates than expected, crisis in food. I tried my best not to have challenges in my department and make everything go smoothly. As I enjoyed the responsibility given to me, I was ready to do more and more work than assigned. Ultimately, enjoying your duty is what that matters. Then I made a whole CODE SYSTEM to code all the folder and the delegates in order to give them the stationary material as soon as possible when the registrations happen on that day. I learnt different techniques to keep the documents and stationery organised and easy to manage. The code system was not so much complicated so as to the volunteers could manage it pretty well. There were a lot of delegates who did not turn on that day, and to keep the event and the debate going, we had persuade people in the OC to participate for the betterment of the event. That was the  challenges that we faced of having less people contributing than expected, I developed persuasive skills in order to persuade people to contribute. Not only on that day, but also while promoting this event and asking people to participate, i built that skill.

Overall, FSMUN 2.0 was a great experience for me and I wish to take part in it next year as well to develop and more and more.

Internship@SDO_25/4/16

By now, I had decided what career I wished to pursue. School gave us an opportunity to get an exposure to work with successful people and get to know about their jobs. I had applied for it and got to work with Ar. Abhishek Bhansali and Ar. Minal Bhansali at Span Design Organisation for a month roughly. Overall it was an amazing experience which made me confident to opt for this field and not any other field. This was the first step toward my journey from a student to an Architect. The early days went reading different books and knowing about the field. Getting book knowledge and exposure was one way to learn and open the doors of creativity. Being an anti-reader it was a little difficult for me to go about it. But then, I thought about perceiving it visually and getting to know about different structures, pros and cons of designing children bedrooms etc. After that, I got to do practical learning as well, where I accompanied some employees there to the site and measured all the bathrooms at the site. It wasn’t easy, I had to climb till the 8-9th floor using the staircase as the site wasn’t built and there was no elevator, then walking around all the dirt and cement, water spilled and other fragments lying all over the floor to take measurements.  I learnt to be patient as well, I learnt that when you are learning something, the process won’t be easy, there will be a lot of difficulties that we have to face which requires patience and the zest of learning. Then, I was also taught to read different plans and know some basic terms about the field which are spoken. There, I came across to “Vastu Shastra”, which can regard them as ethics or rules that need to be considered according to the client’s beliefs. The most interesting part was to have interactive sessions with Minal Ma’am and get to know her journey and experience. I asked different questions and she answered all of them which helped me to get a better understanding and vanish my misconceptions and other myth about the field. I went with Abhishek Sir and one of his client for material selection. I got to know different properties of Marble and Granite. How they are different not only by other looks but their properties and purposes as well. We visited a shop where there not other materials like wood, ply, veneer, neolith, mdf etc. which had their unique looks and purposes. After all this, I was given an internship task to design a bathroom space according to the requirements. By the end of the task, I had to prepare a presentation about the experience and also present my idea about the task. There were different flaws that I came across which Minal Ma’am explained me and then I worked upon it and by the end of the task, I realised interiors was my strength at this stage as I got more exposure about it than architecture. Till yesterday, I knew what field I will go in my future. By now, I know what I will be doing in my coming future.Screen Shot 2016-06-08 at 10.31.56 PM

I am not very much into sports, however, I love playing badminton. I often swim on the weekends. I’m a person who believes in working hard, and who likes to keep everything organised. CAS Essay

CAS has enabled me to enhance my personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and participation is various activities. At the same time, it has made me realise the importance of counterbalance between different aspects such as arts, activity and service. CAS has helped me become a reflective thinker. It gave me the opportunity to understand my own strengths and limitation, identify my goals and plan strategies for my personal growth. The willingness to accept new challenges, tasks and roles has made me a risk-taker. I can also connect to being an inquire because organising projects require the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research. These activities have made me aware of myself as members of communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment, thereby making me a caring person. I have accomplished the purpose of CAS which is to find a balance between intellectual, physical, creative and emotional experiences and to enjoy the journey as a whole.
Interactions and communications with different people in order to fulfil the tasks have made me an optimistic person. Being confident, taking responsibilities, having patience and determination, facing challenges, being good listeners, being organised, showing dignity and integrity are some of the most important qualities that I have developed during each and every stage of this 2-year journey.
Bal Mela 2016, because it has been the most enthralling activity out of all the other activities. Hetvi, Naomi and I, the organisers of the event positioned ourselves as the head of the event, which included planning the activities, allocating those activities, selecting the volunteers, planning the schedule, ordering the resources, calling government schools, arranging the food for around 1500 children from government schools. Managing so many tasks at the same time is challenging, yet fun.
According to me, Learning Outcome 4 (commitment and perseverance) was the most difficult. This really tests your patience. It is very difficult to stay as dedicated and compassionate towards the volunteers and activities till the end of the activity as I was in the beginning. Struggles and difficulties were meant to come in my way. Complaining and critiquing about the challenges is not the solution. Therefore, working towards being committed throughout the activities has been the most arduous.

My CAS advisors shaped you in a way by giving you opportunities to perform and show your skills. The difficulty you faced were you weren’t confident enough or you weren’t convinced enough to show your skills but with the help of stage and CAS advisors I overcame this. I would also like to take this forward in helping others and contributing in making my society a better place.

Visual Arts

Arts Special is a group of different arts such as drama, guitar, keyboard, drums, vocals, visual arts and such like.  I chose visual arts because I had keen interest in learning and executing different forms of visual arts. I developed this interest during my 9th grade, when I chose Art and Design as a subject in the IGCSE. One of my goals for this activity was to perform all the tasks with enthusiasm. I chose visual arts in the 1st and 2nd year of my DP. The visual arts slot came once in 7 days.

I learned many new forms of visual arts.

Art Skill Reflection
Clay moulding I came across lots of new techniques such as slab moulding. These new techniques helped me gain further insight about how clay structures/statues are sculpted. It was difficult to mould clay at first, however I took it as a challenge and practiced harder.
Woodcut Print I found this the most interesting. It required a lot of determination and hard work to clean and polish woods and then carve using interesting tools like U-tool and V-tool and knife. It took lots of days to carve it perfectly. I carved dainty flowers and leaves on the squared wood slab. The most difficult yet fascinating part was applying ink colours on the glass slab, and attach it with the wood for printing. The whole process required rigorous practice, and I made at least 5 copies before printing the final one. It was definitely time consuming, however the output was absolutely beautiful. It was tedious yet wonderful.img_0787
Painting wood Aashna, my classmate and I founded a wooden object in the scrap and we decided to paint it using acrylic colours. It looked like a maze. We used primary colours, white and black to paint it. It was difficult to colour on the edges but that helped me polish my painting skills. The output was simplistic yet fantastic. It looked like a very confusing, beautiful puzzle. We painting little foot steps to make it more interesting.
Diary Throughout the 1st year of DP our teacher, Rahul Sir told us to maintain a dairy in which we could draw whatever we wished to. Maintaining a dairy helped me improve my imaginative and drawing skills. It was difficult to manage time for dairy in between academic submissions.img_0796 img_0791 img_0795 img_0793 img_0794 img_0792
Portrait of my choice The 2nd year of DP with VA started with making a portrait of our choice.img_0789
Skirt After making the portrait, Aashna and I decided to team co-ordinate and design a skirt, and colour the fabric using acrylic colours. It was a difficult task to do because it was new for us, and also time consuming. We decided to draw dainty flowers on the bottom of the box skirt. The colouring process took a lot of time. Our another teacher, Virendra Sir helped us with arranging the fabric and mannequin on which we would display the skirt. It was a lot of fun.photo-on-30-11-16-at-1-30-pm photo-on-30-11-16-at-1-30-pm-2

Overall, I learned something exquisite styles and techniques which I’ll definitely implement in my future.

CAS Profile

Currently pursuing IBDP at the Fountainhead School, Surat, I have a particular inclination towards Business and Management studies. One of my strengths is my fitness, which enables me to do good at most sports. I regularly play and enjoy football and kabaddi and I am quite competent in both. Doing good in sports gives me a special kind of joy. I would yet want to strive towards putting on more muscle and becoming faster. I also have a flair for video games such as Counter-Strike or Age of Empires and I love playing them. Moreover, I believe that I’m creative and when given a task, I can come up with really out-of-the-box ideas. I also cherish spending time with friends.

img_0180

Management is another key component that I have been good at but I would still wish to improve in this particular aspect because I have a lot more to learn and also it is really important for me from a career-point of view. Leadership is also a valuable trait, which as some say, is present in me. I am not be among the strongest communicators so the kind of leadership I wish to perform is not always realised. However, I do acknowledge the fact that I am good around people and somewhat understand the art of dealing with people. Following that, I am a good listener and empathetic to people and their circumstances.

unnamed

Working to the potential is also one of the things I like about myself. I give all of what I have to complete a given activity, whether it be committing to run till my legs hurt or improving on a submission till the deadline’s last minute. It allows me to produce quality work in different aspects of life. It, however, also consumes a lot of time and effort and makes it difficult for me to manage my time efficiently.

I think I’m fortunate that my talents and things that I enjoy the most coincide, or perhaps because they are the things I enjoy, I have worked upon them, and developed them. But still there are things, which I would like to improve upon.

One of the essential things whose importance I realised late in life is my communication skills. This is the primary area where I need to work towards because this will help at all things in life. Although I have improved a lot from where I started in Grade 10, I still have a long way to go and I believe I will be able to be quite decent at it soon. I would also want to push on improving my soft-skills.

My outlook on life is to grow every single day and be a better version of myself the next day. I continually seek improvement. I want to learn new skills and live many and different experiences. I find it interesting to earn more knowledge but only to a point that it is relevant to me; after that I start thinking about where, if at all, I’m going to apply this. So even though I crave for learning, I’m very selective about it. I also wish to become completely independent. I want to struggle, then counter them all by myself and be victorious – that gives me satisfaction.

I also deeply believe in working towards your passion. While playing football or organising my CAS project, I would get so mesmerised that I could not think of doing anything else but it. That’s true even when I used to play video games. I feel I would be really happy with my life if my life were to revolve around it. I am also generally very optimistic  – so even when bad events occur, I start looking for positives and it helps me maintain my emotional well-being. Because at the end of the day, all emotions are just thoughts and I determine how it affects me.

What concerns me is that all the people do not get equal access to opportunities, without which they are unable to realise their true potential and be the person they would have otherwise – in terms of education, exposure or the freedom to make choices. I also strongly feel for women, for they have been the victim of discrimination or abuse in all parts of the world.

I would like to explore more about human interactions in the world, which could be somewhat explained by areas like Management or Psychology. I aspire to achieve excellence in my field of study and also make significant contributions to the welfare of the society. Conclusively, I wish to maximise happiness for myself and for the people around me.
