Teacher’s Day! 2015

Teaching to students has always been a tedious work for someone, while for other it’s passion but at the end they need some rest & that is why we Disha Sarawagi, Khushali Chaliawala and I made a plan to give teacher a while off from their work and give them a treat and happiness which they truly deserve.

It was very important to know what we three people were good at so we could easily focus the strong part and then work efficiently. Being not good at drawing and in art Khushali and Disha took the responsibility to make an art piece for the invitation card, so I started off working on the student replacing teachers where senior most students were going to teach to their juniors and I took the responsibility with the IT handling, in that making groups and assigning works with the classes to the seniors was one of the difficult task, because they have to be briefed properly and no error should be there. Though after seeing the Invitation card I would like to work upon my drawings.

This was the first time I’ve experienced and conducted an event and being the first time new challenges were there which is nowhere similar which I’ve done something before. We had 4 days left to the event and we had to rush everything and had to make a proper schedule for the event day as to add icing to the cake we included dance, drama and band performances presented by the middle year students. Dance and Drama need practices so to present it better new ideas should be inputted so we put ideas of the recent news and for the band performances students played teacher’s favorite songs, so to play that in just 4 days and in that an instrument keyboard which I’ve played for at least 8 years I indulge into the band and gave them chords and improve some mistake that’s where I also developed new skills as I learned some new chords, I felt challenging too, as they had learnt the new types of chords- basically shortcuts for chords, so it was somewhat difficult to communicate but then it was somewhere similar too.

Planning in 4 days was indeed a very difficult task, as we also had classes and was a working day so to manage, we assigned tasks to each other. I started off working by by handling the student name sheet and assigning them classes. A fixed budget was given to us so we thought of something creative and came up with  photo booth which was the best part for teachers as well senior students where they use props and take pictures. So we bought and made some props for them. As this was my first cas experience so I do have to put all of my effort in it, whatever the work was given, from preparing a sheet, sending out emails to each and every student and making out time for decorations and much more. I was excited to learn new things with the organisers point of view, that how do they manage so I went up to our DP coordinator to learn and apply some things in the CAS experience and as a teacher’s point of view how they see us when they teach us. While working in a group you get more ideas as everyone has different types of experience where some of them could be applied in this activity. Photo booth was something new and everyone enjoyed so by that we could make it more interesting when working collaboratively.

CAS Essay

All bucked with deadlines and back-to-back submissions, CAS was like a stressbuster for me. The three components of CAS-creativity, activity and service have helped me move out of my comfort zone and try new things everyday.

There are two activities that come to my mind when I recall my journey of CAS. Both the activities have given me different experiences. The first activity is my group project ASTH. ASTH (A Step Towards Humanity) was the first event that was initiated by me. From the planning stage to the execution stage each and everything was done by me and my friends. Even the choreography for all the dances was done by us. We weren’t dependent on anyone for the resources or for the venues where we had to perform. Everything was handled by us and we were solely responsible for our actions and decisions. This made the task a lot more challenging for us. This activity has helped me discover my strengths and hidden talents. Through this activity I have overcome a lot of my fears and have seen myself developing new skills.

A day spend with orphan kids is another activity that comes to my mind when I think about CAS and the reason behind this is this day made me realizes what true happiness is , what inner satisfaction is and how we should be content with all that we have. When I spent time with those children and saw their faces light up with smiles , it made me  realize what it is to be someone else’s sunshine.

Initially when CAS was introduced to me it felt like an additional burden with all the studies. However, when I started taking up leadership roles with each activity CAS seemed to be more and more interesting. Apart from being a risk taker, balanced and caring the major skill that I have developed through CAS is time management skills.

Overall CAS has been an amazing experience for me and I would love to carry out more such activities if time permits.

A day spent with Special children

I believe that the day that I spent with the special children was a life changing experience. I learned so much about strength, gratitude, and courage. I tried to delve into conversations with the children and what really inspired me about them was the passion that they displayed to learn and the affection that they showcased towards the volunteers and each other.  This was not something that I would have usually chosen to do, but I am so thankful that I was given this opportunity because through those I learned to appreciate even the smallest things in life and face challenges with strength.

The learning outcomes that I achieved through this activity are:

LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills: I did this primarily through trying to effectively communicate with the children. While helping the children learn I had to get them to pay attention and not get easily distracted by the surroundings, for this I had to think of new ways to which they would pay attention to what I was saying.

LO 4 Worked collaboratively with others: The group of volunteers for this activity was huge because of which during the distribution of the responsibilities and other discussions we all had to display cooperation and eventual appreciation for each other.

LO 6 Engage with issues of global significance: Through this activity, I learned to display compassion, empathy, and care towards this special community of people because of which I will become a better global citizen.

LO 7 Consider the ethical implication of the activity: During the activity, I had to be very careful out my actions and the language that I used to make sure that I did not go against ethics and did not offend the children in any way.

Plantation Activity

This was my first plantation activity. It was physically exhausting but I got to learn the usage of appropriate tools used for plantation and how plantation helps its surrounding areas. This activity was very challenging for me in itself however the struggles increased since it began raining heavily. At the end, it was a great experience being so close to nature and its greenery.

The learning outcomes I achieved through this activity are:

LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills: Before this, I had never participated in agricultural activities, so this was new to me. The major challenges I faced were The use of the heavy tools and the pouring rain made it more difficult.

LO 5 Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively: I learned new skills of farming and worked with the volunteers and tried to follow their instructions as effectively as I could.

LO 6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance: The plantation activity that I did acted as my contribution to making the world greener and promoting environment conservation.

CAS Essay

What does CAS mean, theoretically speaking creativity, activity, and service which aims at involving students in a range of activities alongside academics, to develop new skills or individual personality. If I had been asked this at the beginning of the diploma programme I would have said probably another mandatory core requirement (which it actually is) to get a Diploma. However, as the academic year started passing by with every single activity I participated in small initiatives that I took or even getting out of my comfort zone by taking up physical activities just for the sake of meeting my IB requirements. I realized that every new challenge that I undertook, every commitment that I made to things that I didn’t really enjoy doing moreover collaboratively working with new people which may not have been the most comforting and enjoyable things that I may have done. But by doing so was slightly making me more open to new things/activities, confident, more responsible towards community and environment and also taught me time management as I was juggling my time between my academics and extracurriculars.

From my perspectivity and what I have experienced in the past two years is that the overall IB CAS is two step development programme helping every individual develop internally in terms of personality or confidence or new skills etc. and  externally in terms of motivating students to contribute their part of service in the community and towards the environment. When I think about my CAS experience overall it was highly thrilling with more unexpected surprises and challenges but the one experience that has majorly contributed in molding me in the way that I am today is the Diploma Fest. It was the first event in which I myself decided to take up more responsibility and ended up taking becoming the resource incharge for the entire event. Initially it started off with sounding like a pretty easy job (like I just had to arrange resources that were required for the activities and performances in the event) with another person on my side (my partner) however as actually began to do my job as a resource incharge I realised that even though the job description was easy, the hard part was to actually make people do stuff. We faced a really hard time in getting the list of things that was needed to be arranged as people don’t really work as you wish and one has to push them hard enough to get the work done. This journey helped me develop leadership skills, time management as to how to make people according to you and handle last minute crisis and taught the importance of  working collaboratively to make the entire process smoother.

While doing CAS I discovered that one can never completely achieve its true potential or personality as every new thing that we try or new experiences/challenges we undertake act as a building block, continuously redefining and enhancing our true nature and persona. Furthermore, I would also like to confess that anything but the activity and secondly the service part had been the most difficult components of CAS to fulfil as considering my nature I am not a pro-outdoor person, physical activities have been the toughest part as I like to do stuff that come under my comfort zone which don’t push me to communicate with people that are unfamiliar. That is why I found it very difficult to achieve learning outcomes which needed me to show the importance of working collaboratively and undertaking new challenges. Even when I was selecting and planning my CAS project I tried so hard to make sure that it doesn’t completely go out of my comfort zone to make things smooth as it was the only requirement which required me to give my large proportion of time from my schedule and high commitment and a lots of hard work and I couldn’t have been able to do a thing which I didn’t like.

CAS not just gave me a chance to learn and develop new skills and abilities but more importantly helped in understanding my own strengths and limits. Also it has given me a chance to give back to environment and to the community like by volunteering for organizing an event for underprivileged students in my community or by helping in building an artificial forest in my state. Overall I believe CAS is a growing process that has help me build myself past 2 years and which I believe will also help me grow though the remaining half of my life.

DP Fest… 🙌

DP Fest- It was a Hell of a ride. 😛

Let’s just say it was the first big event for me. I still remember, after I received a form for volunteering for different posts in DP fest, I had already decided I was not ready to handle such important posts. But after teachers actually told us that what DP fest is about, I realized that if I don’t volunteer for any one of the two posts in the organizing committee, I would have to perform on stage on the event in front of a lot (emphasis on “a lot” :P) people. My fear of performing on stage convinced me to fill the form. However, I  volunteered for Resource Head instead of event coordinator (I thought handling this would be easier that other two jobs- handling the full event and performing on the stage).

To make things go as smoothly as possible, I and my partner (another resource in charge) Khushali had already come up with a plan that was required to be followed perfectly. I started feeling that choosing this post had somehow made me better-off everything just went untroubled and according to our plan. However, the happiness was short-lived as we realized that even though we were doing work from our side as we had scheduled but we needed others to complete their tasks on the deadlines set by us (which was really not the case 🙁 ). Khushali and I had to literally run behind people to fill the sheets that we shared with them so that we could order resources because as the days would pass it would become more and more difficult to arrange the preferred resources. But everyone still worked on their own paces, Most of the students really gave a tough time in the initial stage itself but Khushali and I managed to collaboratively distribute work and personally make sure that people filled the sheets as soon as possible.

But once we cleared the initial stage of getting our hand on the resource list, we realized that one of the groups (VA) were the next big challenge. The number of resources and the type of resources that they requested was really difficult to arrange. Khushali and I decided to arrange a meeting with the group member and see if we can come up with some alternatives. Although this would only solve the part of the problem, mainly because there other technical issues that created more problems but in the end we just managed to accomplish our task before the event day (running behind people and collecting resources also made me do a lot of physical exertion, which I didn’t know was also a part of the job :P). It every single passing second I realized that no job is an easy job- everything requires the same amount of commitment and efforts.

Once I was done with my task I also helped with the poster for the DP fest and particularly on the event day, I learned to manage the handle the technical job as well ( the lights; the sound and rest running stage duty). Because I had to do it because everyone else was busy with their own jobs (But it was genuinely a nice experience and I learned a new skill as well 🙂 ).
Overall, I was really proud of me and my grades as we managed to put a Fabulous show, against all  odds. This event as not just taught me some random new skill but helped me grow as a person as during my time as a resource in charge I had to talk with and cooperate with a lot of people ( which is a difficult job for an introvert), manage things regardless how favorable the situation was getting and more over for the fact that I tried coming out of my shell and undertook a challenge.

Surat Student Parliament.

Surat Student Parliament was an event organized as a simulation of the parliament of India where members of the house belonged to various parties and forums. A full day of debating and working on a campaign to make individual parties win. I participated as a member of the house as a part of the sustainable development forum.

  1. I learned that one of my weakness was that if I felt like I could lead a group of people, I wouldn’t listen to the opinions of the rest of the group and now that I’m aware of it, I can work to be more cooperative and thus knowing my weaknesses will help me for better in the future.
  2. One of the challenges I faced was a teammate who was quite stubborn and made it difficult for everyone to deal with. There was a lack of communication with him, however, after some ice breaking, we were able to get through to him and understand why he was detached. Thereafter, we didn’t face any issues.
  3. The formal proceedings of a parliament were followed and thus I organized and presented myself formally. Planning out and executing our party’s agenda required a leader and I volunteered to initiate that. I learned that I could be an effective leader and guide people well. I also learned that it is important to know how to plan and initiate since it gives us clarity into what we exactly want.
  4. We were required to perform extensive research on the topics provided to us and therefore it required commitment and many working hours to be spent. However, since the given topic intrigued me, I enjoyed the research and thus committing was not an issue.
  5. An essential aspect of this event was to make our party win and thus, as a MOH, I had to work collaboratively along with the campaign managers and the media managers to build the required reputation for the campaign and gain votes of the members of the parliament. I learned that while working collaboratively, it is essential to hear and understand everyone’s opinions and cater equally to everyone in the team. This ultimately leads to better results for a team.
  6. The topic we debated upon was the best method to achieve a sustainable development without harming the economy. A matter which requires immediate attention for a healthier and safer future. And thus discussion and the imposition of such ideas in the minds of today’s youth would cater to an issue of global importance and thus I now feel like a more responsible citizen of not only my country but also the world as I am more aware.
  7. The ethical issues involved with this activity were primarily on unbiased debating and treating all my fellow party members as equals. After this activity, I feel like I have learned a lot about not being partial towards an opinion and keeping an open mind.

CAS project- leg tennis

Proposal: My friend and I came with the idea of organizing a tournament  which has never been played in the FS hence with our creativity and collaboration we designed a new game called leg tennis and decided to organize a tournament of it.

Planning stage: We made a google form and recorded the responses of the participants.

and the responses were good which can be seen below.

After getting responses we decided to make the rules for the game.

And then we made the poster.

Execution: while executing the event we faced problems with the location where the event was held, with the participants who opted to back out at the end moment and with the PE staff who were not  able to supervise our tournament, although with our collaboration and commitment we were able to overcome this problems by requesting a teacher to supervise the tournamnet, changing the teams and deciding a suitable location for the tournament. As my friend and I were the refree of this event we tried to take a fair decision and we were unbaised to towards our classmates who participated in this event because it would be unethical if we didnot give a fair deicision. The event turned out to be a sucess hence it helped me to develope a new strenght which is how to manage an event in the times of problems/crisis.

CAS Profile

My name is Vitan Praful Patel and I am 16 years old.
It is God’s grace that has blessed me with sufficient amount of talents. I am good at studies(basic requirement for survival in IB!), sports, management, administration and leadership. These qualities have enabled me to get through IB as I have honed my raw skills through CAS, EE and IA’s. I also consider myself a good speaker. I credit IB’s components like TOK Presentations, IOC, IOA, FOA for the same. Although I am naturally good at studies, I have discovered my interest in Humanities. Throughout my life, I have been great at subjects like Geography, History, India Studies, Civics, etc. . I am also blessed with a good amount of humor, which sometimes saves me from problematic issues and other times lands me in one.

CAS Essay

CAS in general has been a very fruitful experience for me, helping me learn and grow as a person. I think Nature Club’s Tree Plantation and Khel Mahakumbh are two activities that would stand out for me. While the first one can be categorised into the Service component, the latter one is an Activity. As a part of my ESS course, we have studied activities being done on a global scale which impact the nature negatively, and the importance of trees in this world has been reiterated time and again. Therefore, to be a part of a service which would impact mother nature positively had been on my list, which was successfully ticked off through this activity. Talking about Khel Mahakumbh, Basketball has become one of my newfound passions, and to be able to play for my school has been a really impressive and significant achievement for me. Both these activities, have acted as life lessons in many ways, helping me take baby steps onto the ideal path of life.

I have learned a magnanimous amount of lessons through CAS. Each component has helped me in different and significant ways to incline myself towards being a more mature and levelheaded individual.I think learning these lessons at the age of 16 will form a basis in helping me survive the struggles life has for me in the upcoming years. During and through team activities, I have been able to become more open-minded through listening to perspectives, opinions and approaches that my fellow members would have, Additionally, I have been able to become a better communicator, as actions and decisions need justifications in front of teams. Naturally, a time limit and deadlines have helped me become a thinker and a risk taker, simultaneously being principled. This is because creativity is required in order for my ideas to stand out, principles are required so that we don’t stray away from our ultimate goals, and risk taking is required in order to generate rewards. My CAS Project is an epitome of the three of these, as we catered to the Creativity component by making a Foosball table within a certain amount of time.

As briefly mentioned previously, I have learnt greatly about myself and others through CAS. I have been able to become more evaluative and analytical through CAS. Taking decisions which would have impacts on myself and others has been a significant part of CAS and because of this, I have become a better decision maker, taking a utilitarian approach. I have learnt to not panic in any emergencies or urgencies because what panic creates is chaos and confusion. What I have learnt about others is that if one person starts panicking, others start reflecting it. Moreover, panic derails us from achieving our goal, causes tension and stress and wastes time, effort and energy. On the other side, I have the opinion that emergencies should be a part of any activity/event as it nurtures our ability to perform under pressure, and make quick decisions, while helping us to become a more optimistic person. Optimism, is one more attitude that I have developed through CAS. When time is running faster than ever, and hopes of winning/completing a task on time is low, optimism could act as a gentle push which helps you cross the finish line. Sometimes, a positive outlook or a positive approach is all you need to inspire people working with you to work harder, faster better, in order to accomplish our ultimate objective.I believe CAS has helped me calm down and become more level headed, as emotions of anger/frustration has always deviated individuals from their paths and drained their energy. I have learnt to not waste my time on searching and shouting on a group member in case of blunders, and instead tried to be more positive and look for solutions. I yearned to move away from being a short tempered, and impatient individual and CAS has helped me do that exactly.

Throughout my CAS experience, I have encountered many difficult situations which needed to be resolved as soon as possible. Most of the time, difficulties faced involved being our precious time being at stake and were a result of poor communication. I have learnt that effective communication can resolve almost all matters. If wars are ended through communication, the issues we faced were to be paltry. Sometimes, difference in opinions, approaches and mindsets meant that things were done differently than instructed, resulting in conflicts. However, we always had someone to guide us through these : our mentors, parents, seniors, fellow members or ourselves! I think learning to help ourselves would be one of my greatest takeaways from CAS as when nobody steps up for you, you got to step up for yourself. Different people helped us in different manners. Incase of people like our mentors or parents, their approaches were more sophisticated, and helped us view situations with much more clarity and maturity. Simultaneously, our seniors or fellow members made us realise where we had gone wrong, and presented with approaches which would rectify the wrong. Either way, it enabled me to improvise and counter the difficulties with greater ease.

I think learning outcome 3: “Initiate and plan a CAS experience” naturally required the greatest amount of work, time, energy, brains and efforts to be carried out. This could be because we were required to start from scratch, starting from searching for ideas to perfecting its execution. So first up, I had decided to do something out of the box and thus I filtered events such as tournaments, fests and so on. Pairing up with two of my like minded classmates resulted in some serious brainstorming sessions, and after three long months, it resulted in us deciding to create one of a kind Foosball table which fitted our budgets. Initially, we figured out we had four months to execute this, but we didn’t realise where these four months flew by. The technical difficulties regarding the type and quantity of materials required were resolved by our supervisor and our school carpenter. Our commitment was on full display as we tackled time issues through putting in extra hours on chilly winter mornings before school. I also believe effective communication through the use of social messengers and division of work helped us channelise our energy into taking the next task available. I also learnt to value the virtue of patience, as our CAS project took us seven long months. Our patience was tested throughout these months, and I could only imagine what would have happened if we gave up in between.

On a whole, I believe CAS could be a very significant part in students’ life as it acts a medium where people discover their passions, which could turn into their profession. The service component of CAS is closely related to the concept of community service, which exists in many countries. Increasing the scale of at least the service component into real life is highly required in this dynamic world, where people need the support of other people more than ever before. I would definitely try and take this forward in order to help others and make this world a better place, where humans understand the needs of other humans, onto the path of ideality.
