@SUO 2015

This is Surat Ultimate organization 2015. A open- Frisbee sports event. It  is one of the school event. I volunteered in this event. I decided to be the head of the food department. Here my job was to plan and manage the meals of the event. I actually initiated as head alone for the first time. In this job, I had no partner as head nor volunteers under me. The reason of participating in this event was to take this as challenge and handle one department alone. I wanted to make the food conditions better than past year and memorable as well.
The event was there for two days. While planning the food I needed to make sure about few requirements of keeping food healthy, filling and as tasty as possible. The players should not feel sleepy. So I needed to take care about the food items I am deciding. In the planning process I was only told that I have to plan for three meal each day. I personally felt that for the players three meal are not enough. So, I decided to talk about this with the event planner. After the discussion I was glad that they considered my point and I was able to convince them about why is it important to add one more meal between lunch and dinner which is a high tea.
After the planning and finalising the food items. My most of the work was on day which was about taking care that food is reached on screen-shot-2016-12-16-at-11-46-31-amtime at all the three grounds (which were at different places). I completed my task alone and it head no issues on day and off day. After this event I was convinced that I can handle the job alone and complete the responsibility. I was glad at the end that I completed my job very well, was appraised by event head as well as the school head.

Organ Donation

*the man in the blue jacket.

U-turn is street fair conducted every sunday in my city Surat, people come here and show their talents and perform something for the locals. On 13th of august there is a Organ donation day, so one of my friend thought of making people aware about the importance of the donation of the organ after they die. Donating organ is very important and this activity led many people to sign an agreement to donate their organs when they die. There are very few organs available when needed for a transplant and this small activity/ Drama in front of people could solve one of the global issue.

This was the first time I would be performing in front of hundreds of people and it was in a form of drama. Drama is performed live, it has to be interesting then only people would watch it and the most important thing is not have fear while performing. So performing in front of local people and conveying our idea to them was difficult because some people seem very disinterested as the crowd would think this is some type of a lecture or it isn’t very relevant, we tried and acted the script 2 time but that didn’t work out, and that’s where we thought to improve our demonstration skills to communicate better; we now started off by shouting in hindi “SUNNOO SUNNOO SUNNOO” and that’s where we got the attention we needed. Again we had a fresh start with the act on organ donation, why is it necessary and spoke upon many more things. This way I showed commitment towards the activity, but at some point of time when no one seems to be interested from the crowd, still we tried again and again, which did made it persuasive to many adults. While working in a group we supported each other  by helping in learning the script and got ideas which could help to improve the effect of drama on the local public.

Make a Difference

This activity was about engaging yourself with the special kids. They just need a little effort from us to prove they are indeed really special and that’s what I learned from this activity. My friend organised this activity and asked us to participate,

So I thought to input my effort to teach and get them into activities like cricket or solving the puzzles. Being a well educated student it is my responsibility to teach someone who are not so capable and this activity is where I could demonstrate my skills.

There were many difficulties faced while doing this activity, while playing cricket, teaching the kids how to throw a ball was a difficult task too, but I showed my patience as they need time to develop themselves, so at the end they successfully learned and they had a smile on their face. This where you are called as a competent person and you’ve successfully applied skill while taking a challenge to teach someone something. In this activity the biggest challenge faced was, how to teach this kids? because they are somewhere different and they had to be taught in a different manner than others.

My friends have helped me a lot in this activity by teaching me about how to handle these kids and that’s what helped me while working collaboratively. So taking advice from an experienced person has helped me by teaching something relevant and in a way that the kids could understand too. I’ve put all of my effort in this activity because this is something special and different, I committed to stay calm and wanted to teach them about solving puzzles or playing cricket. Which is a very difficult task to do as the whole is different. screen-shot-2016-12-14-at-9-18-04-pm

Math-Science Trivia – 2015

Maths-Science Trivia

This activity was a chance to reflect the prior knowledge learnt till grade 10. This was a very different and difficult activity for me to conduct and to make questions for the quiz with managing things for Grade 10 and Grade 9. Till this years we were asked to participate in the quiz and represent our school houses where teachers used to conduct and make questions for us but as we grew up and are in grade 11 a senior year the teachers and the school coordinators decided to let grade 11 and grade 12 make the competition tougher and take part in handling the activity by themselves.

It was a very unique activity to do, because this time we had to make questions and revive our prior learnt lessons to make the best out of what can be done to make a good competition. I also took help from the internet to find out more relevant questions. Everytime, I had to find a different question for both the grades from different topics which has to be tricky, it was very hard.   We had to work in a collaboration with grade 12 and with my classmates. It was my first to make question for the middle years or for the lower grades. I made and gave many suggestion to my teammates and few of them got approved, providing question for them was also a very difficult task too because it had to be easier to understand as they have limited time to guess and making the battle harder.

On the day before the trivia all the questions were organised and then the next day my classmates conducted and in front of a large audience we have to deliver the questions and had to cater the doubts also where we also have to control the audiences by not to disturb or prompt answer to the participant or to support them anyhow as this was a difficult task too. All went well and teachers appreciated the efforts we had put in.

Teacher’s Day! 2015

Teaching to students has always been a tedious work for someone, while for other it’s passion but at the end they need some rest & that is why we Disha Sarawagi, Khushali Chaliawala and I made a plan to give teacher a while off from their work and give them a treat and happiness which they truly deserve.

It was very important to know what we three people were good at so we could easily focus the strong part and then work efficiently. Being not good at drawing and in art Khushali and Disha took the responsibility to make an art piece for the invitation card, so I started off working on the student replacing teachers where senior most students were going to teach to their juniors and I took the responsibility with the IT handling, in that making groups and assigning works with the classes to the seniors was one of the difficult task, because they have to be briefed properly and no error should be there. Though after seeing the Invitation card I would like to work upon my drawings.

This was the first time I’ve experienced and conducted an event and being the first time new challenges were there which is nowhere similar which I’ve done something before. We had 4 days left to the event and we had to rush everything and had to make a proper schedule for the event day as to add icing to the cake we included dance, drama and band performances presented by the middle year students. Dance and Drama need practices so to present it better new ideas should be inputted so we put ideas of the recent news and for the band performances students played teacher’s favorite songs, so to play that in just 4 days and in that an instrument keyboard which I’ve played for at least 8 years I indulge into the band and gave them chords and improve some mistake that’s where I also developed new skills as I learned some new chords, I felt challenging too, as they had learnt the new types of chords- basically shortcuts for chords, so it was somewhat difficult to communicate but then it was somewhere similar too.

Planning in 4 days was indeed a very difficult task, as we also had classes and was a working day so to manage, we assigned tasks to each other. I started off working by by handling the student name sheet and assigning them classes. A fixed budget was given to us so we thought of something creative and came up with  photo booth which was the best part for teachers as well senior students where they use props and take pictures. So we bought and made some props for them. As this was my first cas experience so I do have to put all of my effort in it, whatever the work was given, from preparing a sheet, sending out emails to each and every student and making out time for decorations and much more. I was excited to learn new things with the organisers point of view, that how do they manage so I went up to our DP coordinator to learn and apply some things in the CAS experience and as a teacher’s point of view how they see us when they teach us. While working in a group you get more ideas as everyone has different types of experience where some of them could be applied in this activity. Photo booth was something new and everyone enjoyed so by that we could make it more interesting when working collaboratively.

CAS Essay

All bucked with deadlines and back-to-back submissions, CAS was like a stressbuster for me. The three components of CAS-creativity, activity and service have helped me move out of my comfort zone and try new things everyday.

There are two activities that come to my mind when I recall my journey of CAS. Both the activities have given me different experiences. The first activity is my group project ASTH. ASTH (A Step Towards Humanity) was the first event that was initiated by me. From the planning stage to the execution stage each and everything was done by me and my friends. Even the choreography for all the dances was done by us. We weren’t dependent on anyone for the resources or for the venues where we had to perform. Everything was handled by us and we were solely responsible for our actions and decisions. This made the task a lot more challenging for us. This activity has helped me discover my strengths and hidden talents. Through this activity I have overcome a lot of my fears and have seen myself developing new skills.

A day spend with orphan kids is another activity that comes to my mind when I think about CAS and the reason behind this is this day made me realizes what true happiness is , what inner satisfaction is and how we should be content with all that we have. When I spent time with those children and saw their faces light up with smiles , it made me  realize what it is to be someone else’s sunshine.

Initially when CAS was introduced to me it felt like an additional burden with all the studies. However, when I started taking up leadership roles with each activity CAS seemed to be more and more interesting. Apart from being a risk taker, balanced and caring the major skill that I have developed through CAS is time management skills.

Overall CAS has been an amazing experience for me and I would love to carry out more such activities if time permits.

A day spent with Special children

I believe that the day that I spent with the special children was a life changing experience. I learned so much about strength, gratitude, and courage. I tried to delve into conversations with the children and what really inspired me about them was the passion that they displayed to learn and the affection that they showcased towards the volunteers and each other.  This was not something that I would have usually chosen to do, but I am so thankful that I was given this opportunity because through those I learned to appreciate even the smallest things in life and face challenges with strength.

The learning outcomes that I achieved through this activity are:

LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills: I did this primarily through trying to effectively communicate with the children. While helping the children learn I had to get them to pay attention and not get easily distracted by the surroundings, for this I had to think of new ways to which they would pay attention to what I was saying.

LO 4 Worked collaboratively with others: The group of volunteers for this activity was huge because of which during the distribution of the responsibilities and other discussions we all had to display cooperation and eventual appreciation for each other.

LO 6 Engage with issues of global significance: Through this activity, I learned to display compassion, empathy, and care towards this special community of people because of which I will become a better global citizen.

LO 7 Consider the ethical implication of the activity: During the activity, I had to be very careful out my actions and the language that I used to make sure that I did not go against ethics and did not offend the children in any way.

Plantation Activity

This was my first plantation activity. It was physically exhausting but I got to learn the usage of appropriate tools used for plantation and how plantation helps its surrounding areas. This activity was very challenging for me in itself however the struggles increased since it began raining heavily. At the end, it was a great experience being so close to nature and its greenery.

The learning outcomes I achieved through this activity are:

LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills: Before this, I had never participated in agricultural activities, so this was new to me. The major challenges I faced were The use of the heavy tools and the pouring rain made it more difficult.

LO 5 Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively: I learned new skills of farming and worked with the volunteers and tried to follow their instructions as effectively as I could.

LO 6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance: The plantation activity that I did acted as my contribution to making the world greener and promoting environment conservation.

CAS Profile

My name is Vitan Praful Patel and I am 16 years old.
It is God’s grace that has blessed me with sufficient amount of talents. I am good at studies(basic requirement for survival in IB!), sports, management, administration and leadership. These qualities have enabled me to get through IB as I have honed my raw skills through CAS, EE and IA’s. I also consider myself a good speaker. I credit IB’s components like TOK Presentations, IOC, IOA, FOA for the same. Although I am naturally good at studies, I have discovered my interest in Humanities. Throughout my life, I have been great at subjects like Geography, History, India Studies, Civics, etc. . I am also blessed with a good amount of humor, which sometimes saves me from problematic issues and other times lands me in one.

CAS Essay

CAS in general has been a very fruitful experience for me, helping me learn and grow as a person. I think Nature Club’s Tree Plantation and Khel Mahakumbh are two activities that would stand out for me. While the first one can be categorised into the Service component, the latter one is an Activity. As a part of my ESS course, we have studied activities being done on a global scale which impact the nature negatively, and the importance of trees in this world has been reiterated time and again. Therefore, to be a part of a service which would impact mother nature positively had been on my list, which was successfully ticked off through this activity. Talking about Khel Mahakumbh, Basketball has become one of my newfound passions, and to be able to play for my school has been a really impressive and significant achievement for me. Both these activities, have acted as life lessons in many ways, helping me take baby steps onto the ideal path of life.

I have learned a magnanimous amount of lessons through CAS. Each component has helped me in different and significant ways to incline myself towards being a more mature and levelheaded individual.I think learning these lessons at the age of 16 will form a basis in helping me survive the struggles life has for me in the upcoming years. During and through team activities, I have been able to become more open-minded through listening to perspectives, opinions and approaches that my fellow members would have, Additionally, I have been able to become a better communicator, as actions and decisions need justifications in front of teams. Naturally, a time limit and deadlines have helped me become a thinker and a risk taker, simultaneously being principled. This is because creativity is required in order for my ideas to stand out, principles are required so that we don’t stray away from our ultimate goals, and risk taking is required in order to generate rewards. My CAS Project is an epitome of the three of these, as we catered to the Creativity component by making a Foosball table within a certain amount of time.

As briefly mentioned previously, I have learnt greatly about myself and others through CAS. I have been able to become more evaluative and analytical through CAS. Taking decisions which would have impacts on myself and others has been a significant part of CAS and because of this, I have become a better decision maker, taking a utilitarian approach. I have learnt to not panic in any emergencies or urgencies because what panic creates is chaos and confusion. What I have learnt about others is that if one person starts panicking, others start reflecting it. Moreover, panic derails us from achieving our goal, causes tension and stress and wastes time, effort and energy. On the other side, I have the opinion that emergencies should be a part of any activity/event as it nurtures our ability to perform under pressure, and make quick decisions, while helping us to become a more optimistic person. Optimism, is one more attitude that I have developed through CAS. When time is running faster than ever, and hopes of winning/completing a task on time is low, optimism could act as a gentle push which helps you cross the finish line. Sometimes, a positive outlook or a positive approach is all you need to inspire people working with you to work harder, faster better, in order to accomplish our ultimate objective.I believe CAS has helped me calm down and become more level headed, as emotions of anger/frustration has always deviated individuals from their paths and drained their energy. I have learnt to not waste my time on searching and shouting on a group member in case of blunders, and instead tried to be more positive and look for solutions. I yearned to move away from being a short tempered, and impatient individual and CAS has helped me do that exactly.

Throughout my CAS experience, I have encountered many difficult situations which needed to be resolved as soon as possible. Most of the time, difficulties faced involved being our precious time being at stake and were a result of poor communication. I have learnt that effective communication can resolve almost all matters. If wars are ended through communication, the issues we faced were to be paltry. Sometimes, difference in opinions, approaches and mindsets meant that things were done differently than instructed, resulting in conflicts. However, we always had someone to guide us through these : our mentors, parents, seniors, fellow members or ourselves! I think learning to help ourselves would be one of my greatest takeaways from CAS as when nobody steps up for you, you got to step up for yourself. Different people helped us in different manners. Incase of people like our mentors or parents, their approaches were more sophisticated, and helped us view situations with much more clarity and maturity. Simultaneously, our seniors or fellow members made us realise where we had gone wrong, and presented with approaches which would rectify the wrong. Either way, it enabled me to improvise and counter the difficulties with greater ease.

I think learning outcome 3: “Initiate and plan a CAS experience” naturally required the greatest amount of work, time, energy, brains and efforts to be carried out. This could be because we were required to start from scratch, starting from searching for ideas to perfecting its execution. So first up, I had decided to do something out of the box and thus I filtered events such as tournaments, fests and so on. Pairing up with two of my like minded classmates resulted in some serious brainstorming sessions, and after three long months, it resulted in us deciding to create one of a kind Foosball table which fitted our budgets. Initially, we figured out we had four months to execute this, but we didn’t realise where these four months flew by. The technical difficulties regarding the type and quantity of materials required were resolved by our supervisor and our school carpenter. Our commitment was on full display as we tackled time issues through putting in extra hours on chilly winter mornings before school. I also believe effective communication through the use of social messengers and division of work helped us channelise our energy into taking the next task available. I also learnt to value the virtue of patience, as our CAS project took us seven long months. Our patience was tested throughout these months, and I could only imagine what would have happened if we gave up in between.

On a whole, I believe CAS could be a very significant part in students’ life as it acts a medium where people discover their passions, which could turn into their profession. The service component of CAS is closely related to the concept of community service, which exists in many countries. Increasing the scale of at least the service component into real life is highly required in this dynamic world, where people need the support of other people more than ever before. I would definitely try and take this forward in order to help others and make this world a better place, where humans understand the needs of other humans, onto the path of ideality.
