CAS Trip: Vansda

“I have a new appreciation for farmers and laborer as they work the day and night for such a small income.” When our school planned to go to a plantation site I was mesmerized as it was my first CAS trip. We were been told to take things seriously as they will be evaluating our performance. I was getting jitters as the day was arriving near. My goal were clear to just give my best efforts to make a change in our society. What I thought about are plantation activity was to sow plants but in reality it was much more though than I ever imagined. Gradually I found my feet while working.  The experience of the trip was amazing, we got time to bond with our colleges and had a gala time. We only worked for 3 hours as I was too exhausted to work anymore. I wonder how those laborer work whole day and night for a very little income to feed their family. My motive behind working so hard is to bring a slight change in society which will hence lead to big one. I was able experience and also recognize my strength and weakness in terms of physical and mentally.  I also explored the challenges faced by laborers over there. Even how hard they were working to grow plants. As it was a collaborative event we all classmates worked together and planted trees to make the globe evergreen. At last all I want to say that it was a remarkable event with some learning outcomes and fun time with my friends. I and my colleagues were appreciated from the work we did and make the forest look more beautiful.

Learning Python on Codecademy

Computers have become an integral part of our lives, now we are literally surrounded by it everywhere and that’s why it is important to learn things about computers. One of the major aspects people learn about computers is computer language and programming. So I decided to learn the computer language Python and use it to do programming. This will help me in my future and I will also learn new set of computing skills. From the beginning I was passionate about computers and learning new things about it this also helped me to take this to initiative to learn Python. Using the website codecademy I started learning the language. Initially it seemed pretty easy, doing an exercise daily was not so tough however as I progressed the language became difficult and the exercises became even tougher. This activity was difficult because I did not have a room for actually clarifying my doubts by a teacher. I had to independently search all my doubts on internet and do the exercises. I had the room for cheating while solving exercises by copying programmes from the internet but it didn’t and worked honestly. One more thing was difficult was time management because we had a lot assignments from school sometimes it was hard to manage time and do my exercises, but i made a timetable for myself which helped me organize my activity and kept productivity on top form. After completing 50% of the course I found out that the other half is paid so I was not able to continue. However whatever I learnt helped me with other exercises kept online. This course of programming not only taught me new skill also improved my mathematical and analytical skills. It made me more focused in a way, as when we have a bug in a programme we have to look carefully and find the bug out.Screenshot_32 Screenshot_31

Tree Plantation Drive – Nature Club

In trying to contribute my part towards the nature, I ended up stepping out of my comfort zone, into mud! I have always hated monsoons for the gloomy and humid atmosphere that they come with, and the puddles they leave us with. In spite of I hating even the idea of getting wet, I participated in a plantation drive held by Nature Club, going by the pure thought of serving mother nature. On the first Sunday of July, I chose to wake up at 7 AM, tackle heavy rains and reach KV Central School at 8.00 AM sharp, joining fellow classmates. I had a very simple goal in my mind : to utilise this opportunity to the fullest by consciously making efforts towards saving and serving the environment, as a volunteer.

I wasn’t planting trees for the first time, I went to a tree plantation last year too. Hence, I knew the basics of planting saplings. But the twist here was that we weren’t planting saplings for shrubs, plants or bushes. We were planting the saplings for trees that would grow huge in terms of size and volume. This meant that there were changes in the sizes of the holes and the sizes of saplings itself. Consequently, we had to collaborate and join hands to plant every single sapling. As it was raining heavily, there was an additional hurdle we encountered : the holes constantly filled themselves up with rainwater. How ironic it is, removing one force of nature for the betterment of another! Coming back, we now had to become quicker and more efficient to drain rainwater outside, plant the sapling, cover it with soil , ensure it had good support and check that it isn’t getting crushed. So, to plant one single sapling, we had to demonstrate our skills and work together efficiently and effectively.

I knew that on an individual basis, my work would not affect the environment’s status quo to a huge extent. However, at the same point in time, a quote crossed my mind “ I maybe a one single drop, but together, we are an ocean!”.  This ocean here that I am referring to, is the engagement of people on a global basis, trying to show the ill effects of climate change, and how they can be mitigated through a task as simple as planting trees(afforestation). The negative effects of climate change have been seen and acknowledged by people across the world, implying how it has become an issue of global significance. Increased percentage carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can be tackled through planting trees who take in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. Cutting down of trees for various purposes have brought us increased temperatures. Unless we practice afforestation, climate change remain an issue of global significance. Hence, I think that this experience was a service for our environment.

Last but not the least, I would rate this activity amongst the top as I think I did something meaningful while stepping out of my comfort zone. After all, stepping out of your comfort zone is exactly when your life begins!

Tree Plantation Drive

What activity can give one more pleasure than planting trees and helping to keep the nature clean in this thrilling beauty of the monsoon season? The “Tree Plantation Drive” was a fun, informative and satisfying activity for me. In this activity we had to plant trees in K.V Central School, Surat with our friends and teachers. The main reason I wanted to participate in this activity was that, I wanted to do something for the nature like cleaning the environment, planting trees, or showing awareness to the community about the present condition of nature. I thought that this activity could be the first step for me to achieve my goal/ambition.

Now, that I’ve performed this activity, I think that I have successfully been able to grow in a new skill, which is ‘environmental care’. Well, I have always hated to be surrounded by especially ‘mud’ – it used to make me feel gross, nauseous and it was really irritating for me. The jest in this  activity was that, that the entire activity was primary focused on mud; such as digging hole in the mud, placing the plant in the mud and then cover the plant roots with mud, like everything we did was somehow related to mud. This made me extremely regret my idea to participate for this activity because it was becoming very hard for me to take part with the others, initially. However, when I saw my friends performing the activity with such enthusiasm, I tried real hard to persuade myself into taking an initiative, and in no time I was enjoying the activity with my friends.

The biggest challenge that I faced was when I decided to plant a really big tree. Well I don’t know what got into me, and I suddenly decided to pick the biggest tree in the lot, and plant it almost half the way around the school. The only support I had in this ‘stupidity’ was that I wasn’t alone. I had two of my friends, Vinit and Shasvat and some of the strangers we met there to help me. We started with picking up the plant and transporting it to the back of the school, which wasn’t very far, but with the plant in the hand it seemed we would take ages to reach there, it was that heavy! So Vinit and I, somehow reached there with the plant, and ‘then’ we found out that there was only one big pit empty, and unsurprisingly that pit was completely flooded. Well we obviously weren’t professional planters and consequently we were not at all in a good mood, so we just cut the plastic cover around the plant and tried to fit it in the pit, but just when we thought our work was done, BOOM! – the plant just fell off the pit to the ground, like it wasnt being able to stand still, because it had no support to the ground. In this situation we had two choices a) Just the leave the plant there and go back home or b) Struggle really hard to remove the water from the pit and plant the tree again. Well, we were completely satisfied in choosing option ‘a’ but our ethics came in way so onwards we went with option ‘b’. We tried to remove the water from the pit chance by chance and by then we had Shasvat joining us too. We might have taken approximately 10 mins to TRY to remove the water, but whatever tactic we used, the pit was really very big and it would take us ages to remove the water. Thus we decided another stupid idea, to dig a pit of that size by ourselves; and hence Shasvat and I got to work. It was very hard and challenging for us to dig a pit of that size and to make matters worse, it was raining quite heavily, and as every second passed, we thought again and again to quit, but we were extremely dedicated to our task, and so, after some time we were able to complete digging the pit. Then it was the easy part in which we had to just place the plant the attach it to a stick, but digging up that pit was a real challenge for us and only because we worked collaboratively were we able to complete the task by ourselves.

Well, during this activity the biggest ethical considerations in our mind were that we weren’t supposed to dirty the surrounding, by throwing plastic (which were used in covering the plants) around or just leaving any tree unplanted, and I think I have tried my very best to achieve the ethical considerations. In short, this activity was amazing and I had a lot of fun in being around nature. I was also able to remove my perception that mud is gross; which I’m completely confident about as I was covered in mud the whole time and I was actually having fun.

Taking everything into consideration, I believe that I’ve completed my goal/ambition of helping nature. I hope that I will soon be given chances now and then to complete further steps of this fantasy.

Corel Draw_3/16

CAS hasn’t just given me an opportunity to help and serve my society but it has also helped me develop and learn certain skills and new thing like learning COREL DRAW. It helped me make different artworks in my Visual Arts curriculum and also other areas where needed like designing the class logo on the first day of school. I lacked in my sketching skills so i realised that I could probably try a digital medium which could help me to not only make works that are curriculum related but also help me in designing different logo or something.

There were different shortcuts, the software was fun to learn. It felt like everything you imagine in the world, came to reality in just one click on the mouse and keyboard. Representing my ideas through digital medium and expressing it in my own personal way, helped me develop my own skill and thought process by which the message I intended to convey, was being passed on to the audience. I wrote all those shortcuts in my journal so I could remember all of them and now when I look back at those doodles, I realise how important these doodles will be in my coming future if in case I forgot this. In every session, after leaning certain codes and tools, we implemented them on our work and created different small works out of it having our own view and perspective to it.  Colours are always something that i am fond of, so I played with a lot of shades, tints and tones to make my creativity grow wider and open the door to wilder imagination. I finished my course of learning it and also finished my artworks that were to be made by this software. I wondered, where would I now use this software or where would I implement my learning? In the summer holidays, I wasn’t very focused and committed to this activity but as soon as the school started, the same old schedule of designing the class logo and other displays were given to us. Just like last academic year, I opted for designing the logo. From past 1-2 years, we have been drawing and designing it using different chart paper and pens etc. But this time, I thought using a digital medium would give it a unique touch. We, as a group presented our ideas and then worked upon it. Problems and difficulties did come in our way because of the inaccuracy while using this vector-based software. So, we tried with different possibilities and overcomes those problems of filling colour in an object and creating the graphic version of an image. Not only, that, we also used trial and error method to choose the best option for the logo. Here are my few artworks that I did in the corel draw.

Activity 9: Winter Trip to Naggar| Activity

cam 1115Having been to the Himalayas 14 times before in my short life of 16 years, I can gladly say that going back to the dazzling snow peaks and scenic valleys felt like home. On the class trip to Naggar, I indulged in walks, hikes and treks in the backdrop of rustic villages and quaint backwoods. Walking in the mountains seems very pleasant and charming, but the strength and rigor it demands can make it anything but that. On a trek to Rumsu village, the almost vertical climb on the trail was very challenging for me because I have not been working out for so long and therefore I got the opportunity to work on my fitness in such a beautiful scenery.

Furthermore, every evening, fitness sessions with specialists (however unpleasant they seemed while we were panting in the cold) really helped me improve my fitness. Overcoming the physical challenges really helped me push myself and learn new skills that I am able to use every day such as certain Yoga stretches

The adventure activities (skiing, tubing, ATV ride) really got my adrenaline pumping and helped me appreciate how hostile and tough the Himalayan winter is.

cam 397A highlight of this class trip was reconnecting with my classmates; people who I am surrounded by 24×7 but don’t really talk a lot to (I’m going to blame IBDP for that!). On the trip, because we had so much time in the train and bus and at Naggar, I was able to spend quality time with my friends and this helped me realise that for all my talks for being independent and not needing anyone, I really do enjoy having friends around. My classmates were also a source of motivation during the treks and adventure activities when the adventure element was a little too much for me, and I believe I was able to do the same for them too.

Another thing that unintentionally became a major part of the trip was Ethicality. Going to the Himalayas is such a surreal experience because the hills and forests are untouched by humans, therefore we should make any and all efforts possible to keep it that way. We also realised that we couldn’t classify the advent of tourism in the Himalayas as pure evil because it has undeniably helped raise the standard of living of the local people there and therefore instead of stopping tourism completely, we need to make the industry sustainable. Therefore, during this trip, we tried our best to reduce or carbon footprint by switching off the heater when required, picking up wrappers if we saw any in the jungle trails, not buying water bottles, etc.  Another thing that I did to help the local tourism industry was to buy things exclusively from local cottage industry emporiums.

Overall, the trip was very enlightening, because I got to learn about religion, culture, nature, art and have an amazing time with the treks and adventure activities.

After event SMILES

Creative mela is an event which is a school initiative and is held every year on Gandhi Jayanti to mark the occasion of the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the “Father of the Nation”. This year the opportunity was given to students to organize the event and I was selected as the only event coordinator for the entire event.

Creative Mela is to witness and experience the most exciting hands-on workshops plus this year it was much more fun and perhaps even better than the last year as there were more hands-on activities for all to participate in through workshops.

(Art piece created by students)

There were seven learning outcomes that I achieved from this activity. The key outcome was my indulgence in issues of global importance. Education is a global issue, which encloses the creed for joy, especially for the juvenile children. Education is the most important one can use to change the world. Therefore, I decided to engage in a global issue providing the children with a platform to learn art and value it.

Secondly, I could identify my own strengths and develop areas for growth. I always loved organizing events. My strength is in being always the leader of the group and in directing the team towards the right decision and choices. But, through this event I learned that time management is a very crucial part. It was very difficult for me to simultaneously cope up with studies and the event work. But, through this I learned that we should give priority to things that more important right now, so putting first things first.

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 3.01.25 pm

The third and fourth learning outcome that I achieved was, it was a challenge for me to organize such a huge event being the only event director. I was assigned this position one month before the event. But, due to some miscommunication with the school management I couldn’t start preparing for it from the start. I had to rush in the last week of the event to complete all the work. To make my job easier, I had asked for some help by sending invites to student to volunteer for the event. Unfortunately, I got only 10-15 volunteers for on the day event work. They couldn’t help me with the planning, so I got really upset. Later, I went to one of our event management faculty for some help. She said send an invite to all the teachers too, they may come on the day to take workshops but won’t be able to help you plan things. So, the major challenge that I faced was I had to collect all the names of 1600 students by taking their three preferences and allotting them a workshop of their own choice.  So I had to go to each grade and each section to take the names. I utilized the time of my free slots in school and went to take the preferences. But, at times most of teachers didn’t allow me to enter the class as they said the students would get disturbed. So I had to book appointments with them according to their timings and my timings. To make it a win-win situation for both of us I decided to come early and take preferences of the PYP students. This saved me from not missing my regular classes of academics plus made me utilize the time efficiently.

The entire area planned according to the activities.

The fifth learning outcome was, I worked collaboratively with others. Through this event I learned that it is very important to have a team that can help you make the event succeed. I was working with a team of almost 40-50 people, inclusive of all the student and teacher volunteers. It was fun working with them, because I had allocated them workshops of their own interests, so that they can make new innovations and take interest in making the child have wisdom and make learning full of fun. However, coordinating with the volunteers was a tough job. I had asked them to send me a plan of what they will teach the kids and what all materials will they need. But, few volunteers didn’t make a plan nor send the list. So, I kept sending them a reminder to complete all the necessary work. At the end, before 2-3 days I had arranged for a meeting with all the volunteers to explain and brief them about the on the day job. But, few volunteers didn’t turn up. So it became difficult for me to explain them on the day of the event, plus because two volunteers didn’t turn up for the event, I had to take the workshop and I had to plan something on the spot. However, without the volunteers, this event wasn’t possible, as they were the most essential part of the event. Coordinating with peers who were participating in the activity, gave me a glimpse into what managing a large crowd is like. Moreover, many groups of children came and went, so we had to simultaneously conduct the activity and bid our goodbyes to those who had already completed their share of the workshop.

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 3.01.35 pm                  Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 3.01.44 pm

Students engaged in different activities.

The sixth learning was I showed commitment towards my job. Truly saying, I had put 200% of effort to make this event a success. I had worked for it days and till late night to complete all the tasks. Additionally, I was motivated by always reading the inspirational quotes that said “don’t give up and keep trying” as hard work pays off. This helped me work hard for the entire activity to make the event possible.

Lastly, I considered the ethical implications of my actions. There was one unethical decision that I had made. When I had taken three preferences of children I didn’t give the 1st and 2nd preference to few kids, as there was no space in some workshops. So this was unfair to kids who didn’t get their interest workshops even after giving preferences whilst few kids got their 1st or 2nd preference workshops.  Additionally, my actions provided the children a memory on which they could dwell for the rest of their lives. Plus, my hard work proved to be a potential inspiration for the juniors and the teachers of my school to organize such an event. This could also promote them to engage in random acts of kindness.

This event was successful and I enjoyed a lot. It still brings a smile on my face when I recall the smiles on the face of those children. The moment of sheer happiness just by providing opportunities and free space. I learnt a lot from this activity and for me this was purely worth it. I will cherish these memories for my entire life.

VISUAL ARTS (AS) ~ LONG TERM ACTIVITY @ FS

Visual Arts this year was a completely new and amazing experience. I had tried VA once before, but it had not intrigued me as much. Although much of it was out of my skillset, I discovered some very interesting areas of art which I further explored throughout the year – for example: woodcut printing, usage of clay, painting etc. Woodcut printing was the hardest of all, because we had no prior experience. Carving the wood took humongous patience and effort – but by the end of the unit, we were able to do it reasonably well. This way, I developed an amazing skill which I think I can really grow in over the years.

WoodcutPrint1 WoodcutPrint2

We also worked on installation art. All the VA students together collaborated to work on a project of our own. We initiated the experience and planned together. We didn’t really have to be creative in accumulating blocks, and painting them in different colors – but it was time consuming and hard. Painting was the interesting part. We divided the blocks into groups to paint the blocks in primary colors so that we could finish it faster. We then planned how we would settle the blocks into one installation piece. It was an amazing experience. I really learned to work well with team as we had real fun working together.

IMG_20160316_100139

During our journey with art, we learned not only art, but also about lot of other issues of global significance. For example, we learned the mineral value of the clay. We learned how the art of expression is diminishing as we rely more and more on “lol”, “haha”, “rn” and “gtg” these days. Amidst all this modernization, we recognized the true need to be able to express ourselves and communicate our true feelings through multiple mediums. Our installation art also possessed a strong message about how harmony in life is generated through primary colors and contrasting through the color wheel. The colors can have multiple meanings – about how the few important things in life lead to all other things. My interpretation of it was how perseverance, love and energy can be used to achieve every other color in life. The most basic colors help us identify the most deepest feelings. We also learnt how unity of these colors is so significant to the world we live in. Every other color around us is made of these three colors: red, blue and yellow. However, these colors alone may cause little wonder and would keep us from experiencing the world with all its beauty!

Throughout the year, we also had to maintain a VA journal where we had to spend time daily to doodle and scribble what we felt. This required commitment as it was hard sometimes to find time for VA. We also had to persevere while making the woodcut as some parts of it required patience and hard work. We grew tired but the excitement of the end product kept us going.

Screenshot_1

However, what was perhaps the most important part of our activities was to take inspiration from great artists without stealing their artwork ideas. It was something we needed to consciously maintain to abide by the ethical standards of art.

Overall, it was a really challenging and fun journey learning the art of expression through visual means. I would like to take up more such opportunities. It was filled with learning and I loved VA!

SUBROTO U-17

I was really excited when I heard that I got selected in schools football team again. I always wanted to win this particular tournament because if we win the tournament then the whole team can go further for state level subroto competition.

I was quite nervous at the beginning of the competition. I just recovered from my leg injury so I wasn’t in my best shape but I was fit enough to play the game. However, we succeeded in winning the first match which wasn’t very tough team.

I was able to make few passes in the first game which lead to goal. I was able to keep the ball in our possession most of the time and I was even able to tackle the ball.
I was able pass with accuracy most of the time. I felt I wasn’t tough enough to continue my form in the game. For football, even stamina is very important so that I can keep running and supporting your teammates. I felt I lack endurance.
The challenge I faced was controlling the ball. I wasn’t able to control high and fast ball in the game so what I did is I just gave ball a direction and didn’t stop the ball at all. I simply pass the ball without stop the ball. I succeeded almost all the time.
I played as a midfielder. The responsibility of a midfielder is to keep the ball in possessing and support both forward and defence. As a team we weren’t in regular practice so lack of coordination in our team lead us to defeat in the second game against the home team.
I wanted to play a good game, by good I mean fair, and win the tournament. I played clean game. I would have played physically rough with opponent players who were playing unfair game but I remained calmed and didn’t react in a way which could have injured opponents. There was no foul called on me by referee.
What I learned from our game is that most important thing in any team game is passing skills which keeping the ball in possession of our team.
